  • The crossover between Musk & Trump is now marked by a Musk poll on whether Trump should be allowed back. I don't normally do these things, but I made an exception in this case, if only to see which way it's heading... after an hour it was 60/40 in favour of Trump, but after 9m votes, it's moving closer to parity. It would be quite fun to see Trump lose yet another vote.

    Bring him back, I say.

It's quite an interesting one, in that if he did come back, it screws his Truth Social.

I think we can all agree that's an overwhelming vote in favour.

It's rather amusing that Musk's use of the quote 'Vox Populi, Vox Dei' isn't complete without the context...

Keep hearing these BBC radio ads (yes they are) for some podcast or whatever about the Muskrat including some female voice saying "he's smarter than Einstein".

    Yeah, keep playing that.

It's a documentary on BBC2. It doesn't make you like him any more.

post.news is starting to get a little traction as an alternative - it's in beta phase, but set up by along-serving ex head of Waze and VP of Google and without the weird system of Mastodon.

    Twitter isn't going away.

It might fall over a bit but it'll still be here.

Indeed, but as Murdoch showed with MySpace, empires fall. I didn't even realise it was still online. At one time it was bigger than Facebook.

Nah, the death of twitter is way overblown.
  • Nah, the death of twitter is way overblown.

    It depends what he does.

I'm still standing by my prediction that he won't change very much. But as it's already a tiny bit worse than it was apart from the fact I'm seeing fewer adverts.

Impressed you can spot the difference.

Main thing I've noticed is my timeline is full of people delcaring the death of it and giving me blow-by-blow accounts of what's happening inside, which I don't care about.

It's worthwhile working out why previously seemingly dominant social media platforms have faded to obscurity.

Most of the time, it seems like it's because a sexier competitor came along with better features.

Myspace lost out to Facebook, probably because Facebook was slightly easier to use.

Frendster beebo hi5 etc never had enough of a user base that they held any kind of critical mass.

If there's a twitter alternative there has to be one and only one, because it's strength is it's wide user base.

It's difficult to see that happening, although I don't think musk is good for the health of twitter .

The difference is the "verified" tick being given to randoms who have paid £7.

Clicking through to find out who someone is to find out it's a "not verified" account is annoying.

It's been a long while since I started looking for people to add tbh. I know who I want to follow and I know who's opinions on there I'm interested in.

This is in replies. I'm not only interested in opinions I already know I'm likely to share, but I'm absolutely not interested in people who jumped at the chance to pay to get themselves a "not verified" icon.

But his free speech doesn't extend to Alex Jones.

He's very much posturing like a king, but he really craves the adulation of a certain sort of manchild.

Just follow the people who's opinion's you are interested in. That's not the same as opinions you share.

99% of opinions on there i'm not interested in anyway, that's why I don't follow them.

No not really. A lot of them are tbf. But there are people who's opinion I rate that disagree. Or at least, I recognise they have a good thought process that they articulate.

But it's been proven anyway that looking at the "other side" just radicalises you anyway.

If I'm honest, it's mainly people who have informed opinion on things I like to know about but don't - a lot of financial market and economics, and the rest of it is largely cycling.
  • To be fair, the political info I can get from most of the people I follow would be about this level:

Really starting to notice a degeneration in the platform now. Getting all sorts of complete dross flung at me "based on my likes" but not remotely connected to anything I've even viewed. The latest was some nobody conspiracy theorist claiming an attack on a gay bar was an inside job.

Also read an interesting comment from a company that has withdrawn its advertising. Partly because of their ads appearing next to awful content but mostly because the thing wasn't placing their ads properly and there was nobody to talk to to get it sorted.

I think that could be the way it withers and another platform sneaks in... no big bang.
