It would be great to see some coverage of that finale. Lots of sprinting talent made it together. Ewan pipping Jacobson for the honours.
That holiday to Blackpool is looking to be in the bag for the Ewans. Use of cruet included.

For a moment I thought you wrote 'elementary' but Soler is a seasoned pro I reminded myself..
Is it an autobus day for the LR contenders as the road goes up towards James Bond territory? Can someone tell Caleb that the finish line is at Loudervielle not Loudenvielle just in case he gets a little over excited?
I'll also expect that he will do a lot of moaning today as he plays with the cut off which will be a bit of a lottery and could land him in a sticky situation.

Is/should there be a team prize for the coveted lanterne rouge award? Everyone wears a red helmet?

Today saw a fairly conservative ride from Ewan - ie it was hastily removed from live TV because everyone involved realised it wasn't making them look very good, what with being the political equivalent of watching sausages being made and all. For one thing, the contents were 90% årseholes and bøllocks.

Where was I before Liz Truss once again sucked the IQ from everyone within a thirty mile radius?

Oh yeah, today saw Ewan give up around ten minutes to Jakobsen - the advantage of a clear lead on LR and only a handful of stages to defend is that you can avoid the stress of judging the day's time cut, and with the top three locked out Lotto-Soudal have plenty of cards to play, including but not limited to Mr Bun the Baker.

Join us tomorrow for the final day of filthy mountains.

    Ain't no mountain high enough:

133 HONORÉ Mikkel Frølich Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team 32:16
    134 TURGIS Anthony TotalEnergies ,,
135 HIRSCHI Marc UAE Team Emirates 32:27
136 BAUER Jack Team BikeExchange - Jayco 32:32
    137 SAGAN Peter TotalEnergies 32:39
138 JANSEN Amund Grøndahl Team BikeExchange - Jayco 32:49
    139 BODNAR Maciej TotalEnergies 32:53
140 GROENEWEGEN Dylan Team BikeExchange - Jayco 32:55
    141 GENIETS Kevin Groupama - FDJ 33:01
142 VAN DER HOORN Taco Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux ,,
143 JAKOBSEN Fabio Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team 36:48

On second thoughts that's quite enough, thank you:

That was an absolutely perfect LR ride by Jakobsen today but I can't help feeling he left it too late. I doubt the Lotto led bus will let him gain 20 minutes tomorrow which is surely his last serious chance?

A huge amount of effort for no change in placing though...

However I must agree that it was textbook in all respects!

And there was even coverage on the highlights tonight.
Jacobson clearly after the trip to the illuminations and his teammates wanting to go with him.

Is Blackpool confirmed? I assumed that was just a rumour?

(like, of all the places to send Lanterne Rouge winners, somewhere with tramlines feels a bit too much like tempting fate - I mean, how do you think they ended up at that end of the GC in the first place?)

Got to be surely. I love the small races with odd or rubbish prizes. TDF needs to up its game I think.

Mikkel Bjerg making a valiant attack today, but alone with 15m to the front he might be OTL

Must admit I hadn't appreciated how well Jakobsen timed his effort yesterday. It's a dangerous game, to be sure.

Bauer seems to be benefitting from that disgraceful bit of motorpacing, btw.

I might not have been expecting much from today's stage, the race essentially being neutralised by boring, boring mountains, but there were a few things to note. Chief amongst them was an outrageous piece of moto-pacing from Eekhoff and Bauer saw both of them catapulted off their bikes simultaneously. Of particular interest to students of the Lanterne Rouge were Bauer's comments afterwards, when he said that he'd chosen to smack into the car "because the panels are softer". I'm pretty sure most cyclists do not ride around considering the impactiferousness of various surfaces, and Bauer's intimate knowledge suggests that he might have a future in the Lanterne.

Up at the front end, Pogocar showed some impressive off-road skills to take the sort of gentle-yet-dramatic tumble that usually allows for a few days loafing around at the more competitive end of the field, and Geraint Thomas - a cyclist so laid back he might as well be horizontal, and frequently is - even tried an attack. Since the retirement of Vockler French housewives have been starved of a favourite (WVA doesn't count - he's too successful to be taken to heart), and maybe they've finally found their new TV Thomas.

In the underall it's very much as you are, with no big dramas and Lotto carefully nursing their advantage. The stage was taken by Jeremy the Crocked though, Quickstep somehow butchering their six man advantage.

Tomorrow's stage might cause some issues for Ewan, unless he produces a doctor's note suggesting his head will fall off in the excitement of a sprint, and then it's only the "race of truth" (and looking at the list of time trial winners in tours, I can only laugh ironically at that particular nickname) and the final load of cobbles in Paris.

Albert Torres has had tomorrow's stage penciled in for days now. He's going to Blackpool, I feel it in my bones.

The big question, I think, is does Ewan sprint? That's the title, right there.

Torres may have to go long on the Champs to take the final.

Maybe the chaos caused by the domestiques at the top of the field with their "no racing" unwritten rules could allow for a sneaky attack off the back...

Surely Jeremy was born to win this. B&B holding him back as they don't have a hotel in Blackpool and fear the bad publicity.

I've been told that Brighton is the home of the dirty, weak end, so is presumably where Soler is recuperating after his intestinal travails.

Looks like my man Torres grabbed a decent chunk of time today, still needs a few minutes for that week in Blackpool but might be on...

Oh Ewan! If he didn't have bad luck, he'd have no luck at all. Lotto Soudal got greedy today, and tried to sneak a stage win without imperilling Ewan's place on LR. This had two slight flaws, which were that Ewan was in no condition to contest a sprint, and Movistar riders have never been known to waste an opportunity to stab someone in the back. Admittedly they've tended to concentrate on doing it to their own teammates rather than anyone else, but it has a bred a certain ruthlessness. Torres lost no time in, erm, gaining time - slashing Ewan's advantage to less then four minutes. With a time trial tomorrow being anyone's game, and Ewan likely to be ordered up front again on the Champs, this might just be a finish for the ages.

Meanwhile there was another stage win for the French today, with Bonnamour (and part of me would love to know what profession his ancestor held to earn that name) carrying out the traditional long range attack that forces the peloton to chase you down and then blow you straight out the back. You'll also notice in this image that he's learnt the importance of taking primary position when the road narrows, mostly so that the broom wagon can't think "blow this for a game of soldiers" and speed past you.

    Running up that hill:

130 HONORÉ Mikkel Frølich Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team 10:47
    131 JUUL-JENSEN Christopher Team BikeExchange - Jayco ,,
132 NIV Guy Israel - Premier Tech ,,

    134 PEREZ Anthony Cofidis ,,
135 HAMILTON Chris Team DSM ,,
    136 ROLLAND Pierre B&B Hotels - KTM ,,
137 VAN DER HOORN Taco Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux ,,
138 TORRES Albert Movistar Team ,,
    139 BONNAMOUR Franck B&B Hotels - KTM 21:55

    Running down that juice:

    130 133 ▲3 HIRSCHI Marc UAE Team Emirates 5:05:37
    131 131 - JUUL-JENSEN Christopher Team BikeExchange - Jayco 5:07:13

Torres will regret not being able to find more time today I think. He'll just have to gaze at the Eiffel tower on Sunday and think of what might have been.

Not sure about that, it's very easy to lose a few minutes just by sitting up on the last lap or two especially when your rivals will have to commit to being at the wrong end of the race due to weird sponsor expectations. The classic move is to get into the suicide break on the first few laps, make sure you get caught in plenty of time before deploying the parachute and milking the adulation of the crowd with a few victory laps off the back.

The TT is always very awkward for the Lanterne contenders. Going off first they have to try and guess what the winning time and tinecut will be. It's high stakes gambling

OOH! Ewan with some sort of drag-inducing skin covering on his leg. Interesting to see innovation down at this end of the race - too many teams overlook the possibility of marginal gains. Think he shouldn't have taken the TT bike though - can lose much more time on a normal roadbike even if the cornering improves. I'm also still salty about the "sit up and beg" position being banned by the UCI.
