Cars, cars, cars...

Where is this legendary place that can only accommodate a Polo when most of the population seems to have gone for super-massive-pointless SUVs? I find this hard to believe.
Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

Fellow in the top 1% shouldn't worry about running costs of a Skoda woth 100k miles on the clock.

Was in a cab the other night and he said his family car was a 2015 Skoda with 250k miles on the clock.
I asked how many he'd done out of that.
190k.

Yeah I’d say 90% of cars here are hatchbacks and those with SUVs regularly park *a long* way away which defeats the point of a “family car” with prams etc
Im on a terraced street and my house is barely over 3.5m wide.

Surely you're not restricted to parking directly outside your house with a car that's no wider than your house? If so, move house asap.

No but with prams and babies/toddlers etc it’s a real pain to have to a schlep to the house. If I wanted to walk, I wouldn’t have driven!

I advise against a Rolls Royce Boat Tail.

Principle still applies. You have bought a house in the wrong location if you require easy access to a family sized car.

How about a Plymouth Gran Fury?

Don't buy a house in Topsham. I've sometimes had to walk 750m from where I've managed to park, but sans babies and all that jazz. If I have got gear to unload, I unload it into the house, then park the car wherever and walk home again.

Cheaper. Better turning circle. Not as good on gas.

Yes but he could live in it. Lots of problems solved.

A house with a driveway to park your car on might be a good idea?

Okay. Let me rephrase it. You are looking at the wrong solution to the problem.

Yeah I wasn’t expecting to have children when I bought the house and car. Whatcha gonna do.
not really in the market for hindsight advice on life choices - some on here know stuff about cars so I thought I’d ask.

Anyway I found a 2015 Golf R for £14k so will check that out next week if it’s still around. 70,000miles.

If you are being practical then the R loses boot space and rear footwell for the 4WD. A GTI is the more practical solution.

Yeah that’s right - figured I’d see it in the flesh. There are some 2L with better prices - I’m sure that’s fast enough.

Also beware anything with 19" wheels. The tyres are getting close to double the price of 18".
The R is a very nice car though, I bought one. 😉 Seats are super comfy but a test drive could lose your license if Race mode is engaged and you put your foot down.

Yes. There’s absolutely no reason for that kind of power.
Problem is I’m a closet petrol head but I really try hard to keep it under wraps by ignoring cars as I know if I start paying attention I will end up spending a fortune unnecessarily. It’s hard not to pay attention when you’re shopping for a new car however.
I actually won a series of go kart races at uni to be one of the uni drivers in the BUKC but we ran out of funding after 2 races. It was mad, we prepped on hire karts and the first time I went in one of those BUKC karts was at the first event. F@ck me those things felt like rockets. Could do a lot of damage if you crashed.
I suspect it was more down to my then flyweight and the local tracks which were all built on hills rather than any skill. Literally just outdragged them coming out of the hairpins at the bottom of the hill most of the time

It wasn't what I meant really. If the cam belt falls to bits, it was waaaaay overdue. The flaw is in the camshafts.
I would still look at a Focus though. Fords have come such a long way. Mate has an ST. What a scream.

There is a reason, it's called fun 🙂 You only live once.

I had to drive a friends a few years back as something needed picking up and he’d had a drink. Really nice to drive but as others have said maybe not the right choice if looking for a sensible family option.

I'd say its a very good family option - perfectly good for carting family and stuff about etc, but fast and fun when you're on your own and want to enjoy a spot of driving. Makes more sense than having a boring family car plus a 'sports car for the weekend'.

scrolling through the mot histories for some of these golf Rs. lol.
a litany of failed MOTs, overworn front tyres & brakes and broken front suspensions - they’ve all been razzed

Yes the ecoboost engines up to about 2019 have a wet belt that require the engine to opened up to replace - were meant to last the lifetime of the car but don't - especially if the exact correct oil isn't used. I'd avoid like the plague. Think post 2019 are a chain.

Mmm realistically I think my (arbitrary) budget won't stretch to a hot hatch unless it's got 6 figures on the clock. Need to move house really so I'll just go for a boring low spec golf, though probably the 1.4 petrol.
