The faster you can get your overtaking done, the less time you spend on the wrong side of the road. So it's usually safer to get past as quickly as possible, I.e. faster = safer when overtaking. I like having that safety feature on my car.rick_chasey said:

I very rarely overtake other cars when i'm driving except on the motorway, maybe the occasional bike or tractor. I don't feel like I really get stuck behind anyone who is going to slow me down enough to bother.
On the motorbike I pass hundreds every day but rarely need to use much speed to get past them.
It would take some getting used to if the power cut out when I hit the limit though.0 -

Just tell them if they go faster, they'll get there quicker and so use less fuel as they're driving for a shorter timeFirst.Aspect said:

I’m also intrigued by the waves of speed. You suddenly get half a dozen cars come bombing past within a few seconds of each other.
Obviously you sometimes get a couple of planks racing each other, but this is more people getting sucked along by others actions.0 -

For example; they have restricted trucks to 40mph along the A75 for long sections. Some hauliers have switched to the Irish route via Liverpool because of the delays of the slow A75 + fuel costs.
So you can get a line of 3,4,5 + trucks and you have limited overtaking or you may be stuck for miles and miles, especially when there are cars in front of you behind the trucks.
At 40mph, this is a problem. At 56, it's simply annoying. Legally, as it's an A road, I could go at 60mph but the real world is such that I will drive at 60-70 knowing that the 11% (unwritten rule) will mean it's unlikely that I would get pulled over.
If some electronic device stops me from going over 60, trying to overtake a truck doing 56mph would be dangerous and virtually impossible.
So I would have to sit there at 56 (theoretically) for most of 105 miles. With roundabouts and various points where there are 30mph limits, you could easily be expected to spend 3+ hours making that distance when it already can often take 2 hours just to get to Dumfries because of slow vehicles.
The A9 was notorious for accidents and to a certain extent, it' still is. They put radar cameras along long sections of it and now the A9 has gone from a good drive to a PITFA. People see the yellow cameras and drive at 45mph. Sometimes occupying both lanes.

That 11% unwritten rule you mention is actually a 10% + 2mph written 'rule' (ACPO guidelines).0

We get an issue on the M4 near me where there is a 50mph environmental speed limit enforced by average speed cameras. When the motorway is busy it can become very difficult to safely get over from lane 3 to exit at a slip road. You either have to know the area well enough to get to lane 1 just before the speed limit starts or hope someone will let you in0

I seem to overtake more cars when I'm on my bicycle than in my car. Usually all the cars that have badly passed me a few minutes earlier. Sooooo satisfying.

I’m usually pretty good at identifying patterns in behaviour and commonalities but I have no idea what the common factors are to this day.

Although I will say, driving on motorways in work time (large proportion of regular commuters or drivers) is very different to the weekends.
