The Ondra guy, I saw him in Cham. Everyone else was getting 4/5ths of the way up and then fumbling an insane stretch. He waltzed up to it, (I kid you not) turned upside down, made the stretch with his feet, slithered back round the right way and topped out

    ddraver said:

Well the men have solved that problem by eliminating all the speed climbers...

With seeing Ondra in Cham, do you mean at the Kletterzentrum at Cham, in Bavaria?
No - the world Cup in Cham-onix :pensive:

I don't know enought about it really apart from remembering Ondra stopping even the drunker crowd members dead. I was going from what the commentators were saying

They were only given space for 2 climbing medals, which is why they invented combined. The climbers aren't happy about it at all, because they regard speed climbing as something completely separate. Nobody makes the cross from lead/boulder to speed or vice versa. It's pretty much like asking 100m sprinters to do high jump.

The overall combination idea was started nearly a decade ago at Climbing World Championships, so wasn't 'invented' just for these Olympics.
But yes, many climbers have felt the combination was wrong because of including speed climbing; the comparison I've heard was asking a 100 m sprinter to do a 1500 m race, and vice-versa.
However at Paris in 2024, speed climbing will be separated from bouldering and lead-climbing, so will be a separate competition with its own medals.

The speed climbers will be pleased with that, because at the Climbing World Championships over the last decade, I don't think any of them have ever been on the overall combination podium. In the men's competition, it has mostly been someone who is a top lead-climber and a good boulderer who won, and in the women's competition the reverse.
Duffy, who at the moment is I think third, is therefore maybe looking a good bet (although I'd say 6 of the 8 finalists stand a chance). And of the women, Janja Garnbret should be favourite.

This video shows Garnbret going up the chimney at Trbovlje Power Station in Slovenia (from where she comes), yes another top athlete from Slovenia!

Cheers. Any climbers thinking of popping over to Copenhagen for the TdF next year might want to have a peek at this 82m wall

Think its a club membership with qualification to actually climb it though

    Time for the Spider women...

I like how the outdoor brands have got in on providing olympic gear all of a sudden...(Although I guess they did for freestyle ski/board already)

Was that the one who came down like a spider throwing a tantrum?

(talking of tantrums, the French protest in the sailing was a bit of a poor show - achieved nothing except preventing the gold medal winners from celebrating)

No problem, that was me being dim. I mean, I say Kitz myself (for Kitzbühel).

I suppose you mean the Climbing Cup event in 2019. Actually Megos was quicker than Ondra, but then fell just short of the top, and Ondra eventually reached slightly higher although not the very top.

If Bassa Mawem does withdraw, and the organisers want to keep to 8 finalists, then Megos is next in line, as after the preliminaries he was 9th.

That was a superb race. You could see Denmark were getting ragged, and Ganna just monstered it.

Skateboarding is like dressage - I can tell it's very skillful and takes a huge amount of dedication and practice. But it's just not spectacular enough to get to the levels of bmx or gymnastics for me to go from uninterested for 3 years to suddenly excited.

The park is a bit more interesting than whatever the thing was with the stairs and bannisters though.

The best final so far for me, epic performance - you could see what it meant to them at the end. Thought they were done and dusted when the gap was the best part of a second, but then the Ganna hit the front.

We know Ganna has this ability to accelerate in the closing kilometre of an individual pursuit, but what he just did there was astounding. The Italians were essentially a second faster in the closing kilometre, almost purely due to Ganna.

Trying to work out how anyone, even Chris Broadman, can call Ganna "Italy's secret weapon". He's hardly an unknown.....

Men's tomorrow morning might be more to your taste.
Women's skating has always been a bit meh.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Re other road cycling disciplines - I would be more interested in say a 100-150km 2 up TT.

They tend to generate some great stories.

There used to be a 4 up TTT of around 100km if my memory is correct. Certainly was / is at the Commonwealth Games as I knew most of the Welsh team in 1994.
Yes I used to ride with one of the Seoul GB team when I first got into cycling.
Eros poli was a gold medalist at that discipline IIRC

That was an incredible pursuit final. Denmark broke the WR from the day before but Ganna was ridiculous. Brilliant to watch such a tight race
