Twitter now saying hamstring injury. Out of 200m and (I'm guessing) relay too :(

Yeah turns out had a hamstring tear and had a second opinion to avoid surgery which would have definitely put her out of olympics

Yes she just gave a long interview on the BBC explaining that it was initially diagnosed as a rupture ie no games, then rediagnosed as a bad tear.

Said she was in the form of her life before the injury.

Said similar to ES. Remarkable interview - she seemed in a really good place about it, fortunately - I guess knowing you're lucky to have been able to even give it a go helps. Came across really well - her reaction to the false start siren was interesting, too.

That's disappointing and explains it. Not sure if we had any other runners who made the qualifying time but it seems a big risk by UKA taking her assuming they knew.

But she was still less than a tenth away from being in the final I’d say that’s a risk worth taking

Quick note: I'm not including *any* Swedes in The Vikings Are Coming thread, no matter how much they bellow "I'M A SWEDISH VIKING!" after winning gold in chucking stuff.

The light show before the 100m seems a little over the top. Although 100m in the dark has its merits

Liked the way the French guy approached that - really gave it a go - maybe needed to sit on Yee for 10 seconds to recover but credit to him for launching a couple of proper attacks on the bike.

I think he had to - all the talk beforehand had suggested the run was Yee's strongest leg, and catching him cold was the best bet. It just didn't work, but that's not Luis' fault.
Yee has run 7:45 for 3000m. No-one in that tri relay was getting near him on the run.

    Shame :(

I'm not sure she was ever really a medal contender, but still. I have a bit of a soft spot for her, I think she's a good (yuck) "role model for young women in sport"

She was World Silver medallist over 100 and winner of the 200 in the last major global champs in 2019.
Given the times they ran it would have been tough to medal over 100 I agree, but not impossible. Ta Lou ran 10.78 in the heat and I'd say DAS is better than her.

She was one of a few in contention for the 200 but we'll never know now. If Elaine Thompson takes that form forward into the 200 she could run something not seen for 30 years. How much of this is down to the new spikes is a question.

they are some big units. If they want to call themselves Vikings I would let them.

different training groups beef. But for a multiple world and OG champ I did think SAFP could have been a bit more magnanimous.

I reckon Jamaica might have an outside chance in the women's 4x100.

I did enjoy watching the athletes mooch out for the elite frisbee final though. An eclectic collection of styles from "nightclub bouncer" to "man at barbecue who's just seen a particularly good looking rack of ribs"

Talking of Swedes, it was great to see a proper fat lad winning gold in the discus. Fat people are shamefully underrepresented in top level sport and people forget that of the next generation it's the fat kids that need inspiring.

He carries some timber (155kg according to internets) but being 6ft7 is probably the most relevant part. Wingspan is very important in Discus. More so than the other throwing events I'd guess.
I also suspect a lot of potential good throwers in the UK are steered towards Rugby,

Only person who could get near him in the 10k in the individual race was built like the complete opposite of a distance runner. I appreciate it's about having the strength to get to the run in good shape but it still looked very odd.

At 6'7" with a decent wingspan he could have been a basketballer, though I'd hazard a guess that his airtime would be limited (also said by a fellow fatty)

indeed. He also looked about 40 when he's 27. Yee did do a lot of work on the front in that 10K but still.

There will be more very big lads along later in the week in the Shot. Some huge throws from Crouser this yr including a WR.

    She's too young for me

    (😭)

(I did like that it's clear Tom Pidcock is 'only' 21 but clearly also a bit 🙄)

So the eventing cross country is on and the co-commentator is going out of his way to sugar coat that a horse won't be harmed when it hits a fence or that giving it a "tap tap" with a whip is fine so long as you give it a well done after it's done your bidding...

Kid’s bike thing was quite impressive.
Worthington pulls off of 360 backflip for gold after crashing the first time, when she could have played safe for a medal.

The BMX was great. 4 BMX events (including the racing) and GB get medals in all 4!

It's really refreshing not having media trained athletes giving interviews after events, so much more passion and honesty compared to save football for example

Duncan Scott won another silver in the 4x100m medley (So that's three silvers and a gold for him). The team, Luke Greenbank on backstroke, Peaty on breast, James Guy on butterfly and Scott swimming freestyle

Switched on just as they were showing that BMX round. That was truly incredible.
  • I'm almost as impressed by the commentators recognising what the hell's going on than I am by the competitors for nailing it. Glad there was some sort of crowd for the BMX final though - their reaction gave so much more context to tricks being landed (or not) than just the commentators getting excited.
