Duncan Scott won another Silver in the mens 200m individual medley. In total he's won two Silvers and a Gold medal.

Fantastic results for Bethany Shriever, Gold and Niek Kimmann Silver.

The rowing is shocking and needs a bloody good shake up the look of it, considering I think it costs around £25,000,0000 in funding.

Think you mean in the mens Niek Kimmann takes gold for the Netherlands, Kye White the silver for gb.

Worth pointing out that Bethany Shriever didn't get any funding and had to set up a Crowdfunder...

    That's incredible.

She came first in all three heats and went on to win Gold, bloody brilliant.

R5 interviews Kye's brother whilst I was coming into work. super excited is an understatement, and was really positive about the inclusiveness of BMX - they're Peckham residents. Said loads of clubs have the equipment and kids just need to rock up and ride.

I thought Pinsent's questioning the GB rowing performance director was a pretty good example of how to ask the difficult questions. To be fair the performance director answered them fairly directly whilst avoiding any direct criticism of the rowers. Made the point that only about 20% of the team were returning Olympians compared to the usual 50-60% and that other teams have come on a lot (although the real question is how they've done that with lower funding than GB).

Shaznae Reid said the same thing. She didn't have her own equipment and hired the bike and helmet from the track for a few quid for each session.

I was listening to Radio Five. The good news about Rob Hatch is that if you miss anything important he handily repeats it for you.

    What's he calling?
He was doing the commentary for the BMX with Victoria Pendleton, who apparently once looked down a BMX ramp and had to crawl away. Which tbf is a better quality of punditry than I've heard in some sports recently.
Yes, the MTB was woeful; a cricket commentator ( though he does the Cape Epic), and a former road/track rider, who knows nothing about MTB....

Three more years then he will be out of a job I think. There seem to have been quite a few snowflakes in the men's team in particular, which is a selection issue.

Too much focus on performance numbers on land, if you ask me, which is a technical issue.

This is the same trap the US have fallen into for decades (and via college rowing they are hugely well funded as well).

If you get a chance, try and find the Jill Douglas interview with Ruby Tui from the Black Ferns in the rugby sevens. Absolute TV gold - starts with a load of fluent (I assume) Maori, segues into praising the Russian team, then Jill Douglas asks about the GB team and she goes off on one. Really sparky, and straight into my mental list of athletes it'd probably be really good fun to go for a beer with.

I always like Ed Leighs commentary. He seems to cover what is considered the more extreme sports and snowboarding.

The jeans around your hips sports where the competitors peak at the age of 13?

Gymnastics too, they're always pretty young.

I should have also mentioned regarding BMX. I hope the news on Connor Fields (USA) is positive and he makes a good recovery, that was a nasty crash.

Gymnastics used to be a teenager's game till they changed the age rules, and they are hard as nails.

The track is just down the road from me and it's always heaving with kids. Really has been a great investment.

Do BMX riders wear padding under their tights or was that just Bethany Shriever's immense thigh muscles? O.M.G!!!

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

Ha ha Ruby is cool as. Yeah she starts off by thanking/blessing her family and community (whānau), land/country (whenua) in te reo. Ruby has big mana.

I'm generally less interested in ball games in the Olympics. They have different dynamics that I don't feel are in the Olympic vibe - know what I mean?

Yeah, and polo should definitely be in the Olympics for full inclusivity.

Isn't their funding going to get cut massively based on this?

I thought the allocation was pretty hard nosed based on medals and medal potential.

I'm ok with the some of the other ball sports. Golf and tennis are low on my list. Probably basketball too.

I'm enjoying watching sevens, which has a very different atmosphere to regular rugby (and at no more than twenty minutes including half time, is pretty short and sweet). The Fijians rocking up to give everyone a headache helps with that - it's not just the usual suspects.
