I think we really need to hear from the Dutch riders in the race as to what exactly happened.

I gather they don't have radios in the RR. What about teams cars for refreshments and bike changes? Did they have source of information?

As ever, I'm left wondering why "They fuked up..." is such a hard concept for people to grasp...

Surely one of the Dutchies was given the role of road captain to monitor things like you know breaks and the like? They b0llocksed it up big time.

I broadly agree with getting rid of race radios but the organisers have to make sure the riders get proper info on the boards. It doesn't sound like that was happening today.

Seb Piquet said there was 2 motos with blackboards given time gaps every 3-4 mins

So on the line the Dutch were saying they were given gaps to group 2 but not kop van de wedstrijd

Should have looked left as they were coming up towards the motor racing circuit.

More generally, which event would we want Carlton Kirby to be commentating on at the Olympics? Fencing could be a good option, plenty of chances for witty puns.

“ Marianne Vos says at Radio 1 that they knew there was still one ahead. Contradictory messages from the Dutch camp.”

Vos either doesn't want to be seen as part of this Olympic blunder or she's just shafted her team mates.

    Lovely stuff.

Surely being given gaps to group 2 tells you there's a group 1 somewhere even if you don't know how far ahead they are?

I’m calling it group 2 for clarity. They were saying “we only had a 1:54 gap”

GB guaranteed a gold or silver in Taekwondo. I've finally worked the sport out - the first 2 rounds are about avoiding each other so skip them and just watch the third where all the action happens

its a 5h1t sport..basically clumsy fencing with your legs
You're not wrong there. The head "kicks" when they are in a clinch show impressive flexibility but calling them kicks is a bit of a s stretch. It reminds me of some of the roller skating moves in Goldmember.

Even without decent time checks they should have been able to find out how many were in the initial break from the team cars in the early stages and worked out there was someone unaccounted for.

Cecilie Uttrup was pretty scathing about the Dutch (and other big teams) tactics (ie nobody working) Said it was a shit race and not a good exposition of women's cycling.

She also seemed to be the only rider to congratulate the winner.

As for the old race radios debate, I've always said that I want the best riders racing with the best info, I agree with Vaughters *shudder* that chaos in itself isn't good racing.

That said, everyone knew there'd be no radio, if nobody goes back to the car and if no soigneurs are giving info at feed stations then you've only got yourself to blame for not counting the break back

Can't help thinking Cecile must rather enjoy Team Oranje being taken down a peg...

It was a farcical race. It also ruined the spectacle.

Can’t blame the winner - she earned it.

Does anyone know how long the MTB race is? I see it starts at 7am, was hoping to watch the whole thing before the Teams meetings start.

It's like CX in that they aim for 1hr 30 after the first lap
