You're only as good as your last game and given we beat Germany 2-0...rick_chasey said:

The footage of behaviour afterwards doesn't look great with Covid rates surging.
Lucky there wasn't a far better sporting story yesterday that isn't getting a mention.

Yeah arguably Germany aren't tier one anymore either at the moment, but it's the first 'big' nation England have beaten in a knockout for god knows how long. That is worth celebrating.Stevo_666 said:

Wasn't he a bit goal shy a while back? Always looking to pass instead of shoot. Not really a problem now, from the looks.0

I enjoyed the Stones Walker chest bump yesterday. Nice to see that kind of intensity from the players.Pinno, מלך אידיוט וחרא מכונאי0

With Kane - he does seem to draw a lot of defender attention. I quite like him with Sterling as the defenders always seem to have half an eye of Kane.
I know the finish yesterday was a tap in but it was an awkward height and what's nice with Kane is that you know he does not miss those. How many sitters have you seen missed in the tournament thus far? Plenty.
What Holland would do for someone like Kane. Not everyone needs to be fast.0 -
Hate is obviously a strong word, and in my case, it is more of a mild dislike.rick_chasey said:

As a player he was frustrating to watch as he had all this talent, but could only score from within the six yard box. As an opposition fan, it was quite a amusing, but it was more annoying in international games.
As a person, he had a messy transfer from Liverpool to Man City which didn't make him look great. He was, of course, young and being poorly advised, but nonetheless he made a mess of it - doing TV interviews is a good sign of that.
My personal dislike is watching him intentionally celebrating in front of opposition fans. No classy player does that. It is the sort of thing Ronaldo did. The difference is that if your purpose in life is to wind people up (e.g. Robbie Savage), you need to accept that you will be unpopular with some people, or at least on the receiving end of unfavourable commentary. He seems to complain about that quite a bit without reflecting on whether he could have behaved better himself. There's always someone on Twitter who will trot out totally unacceptable comments, but that doesn't mean the initial act on his part was justified.0 -
Haha is celebrating in front of oppositions fans so bad?
Am reminded of this excellent thread

It's not great. Depending on the extent of it, it results in a booking.rick_chasey said:Haha is celebrating in front of oppositions fans so bad?
When Adebayor ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of Arsenal fans, he got a two match ban and a fine.
Never heard rustle used like that. Vardy is admired for his loyalty to Leicester, but the point is that if you are going to wind-up fans, expect to be unpopular and abused. I imagine Vardy enjoys it and uses it to play better.rick_chasey said:
Pietersen is an example of that in cricket. One opposition team, probably South Africa, had a policy of trying to ignore him and not sledge him at all as they felt the sledging made him play better, and they had a point. One of this finest performances was when the South African crowd turned their backs on him.
I read an article recently written by a women footballer who plays in Spain. She said there was a photo of her celebrating a goal and in the background there was a guy with his middle finger up. I was expecting complaints about abuse, but instead she said how much she loved it. To play in a game with meaning where the fans cared. She wanted the abuse as previously she was playing almost exclusively in front of mums and young girls.

Thanks that's interesting. Also the link on there to the player ratings from a few European papers - notable how none of them think Saka had a good or even an ok game.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -
Mmm. He got booked and was quite enthusiastic. Often British fans mistake that for having a good game.DeVlaeminck said:rick_chasey said:

I think Walker has been poor this tournament. He gives the ball away a lot.0 -
Nicked this thought from elsewhere, but...
They were right about the group of death:
Germany out
France out
Portugal out!2 -
It wasn't his best game. Gave the ball away quite a bit, and unnecessarily. He can definitely play better.DeVlaeminck said:rick_chasey said:

Yes not enough end product would be the criticism. I thought he wasn't bad - certainly not a stand out player but better than the ratings he was getting.TheBigBean said:

I am guessing that you have never been a part of a large raucous football crowd? it really can be very good fun. In the absence of incidents on the pitch or provocation from rival fans then doing "bad" things is one way of stirring up the emotions. Howling down the opposition anthem whilst laughing at the opprobrium of the blazers and John Motson is very good fun.rick_chasey said:

It is the fact that booing the German anthem is so normal it doesn't even get commented on. It was really loud.
Pathetic.
TLDR - it is good fun and the more people it annoys the more fun it is0 -
I haven't noticed any other nations doing it.surrey_commuter said:

And yes, I've done my fair share of Sheffield derbies.1 -
It's a pretty ignorant and rude thing to do. Frankly it's just embarassing. But the collective english soccer crowd has minimal brain use. A major part of sport is respect. Booing a national anthem shows a complete lack of respect.surrey_commuter said:

Without respect you simply don't have a sport.

Yeah look it's not club football. I get that that is part of club football. Derbies, rivalries, rustling (apparently ;-))Dorset_Boy said:

I know its not the Euros, but Everton have appointed Benitez as their new manager.
Cue protests from the Toffee fans.0 -
I suppose they remember the time he was Liverpool manager and referred to Everton as 'the small club'. He wasn't popular at Chelsea either as he'd been at Liverpool previously and was known as 'The Interim One'elbowloh said:I know its not the Euros, but Everton have appointed Benitez as their new manager.

He does indeed. His wife and kids still lived there when he was Newcastle manager. Not sure if they all moved when he managed in China or stayed at home?womack said:He still has a house on The Wirral to the best of my knowledge.

Now that was never a red surely. Not studs first, just kicked the ball. Not even a foul.0

He's looking for reasons to give the red isn't he. I didn't think it was out of control or 2 footed but I can see how someone could interpret it as such if they were trying to justify the red.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

There's a lot of outrage from some countries about the cup final being held in the UK. They have control over their borders, so can quarantine or ban anyone they like from attending. So not short what the point of complaining is. Overlaps a bit with the Brexit and Coronavirus threads.0
