So the two halves of the draw...

France, Switzerland; Croatia, Spain: Belgium, Portugal; Italy, Austria

Netherlands, Czech Republic; Wales, Denmark: Sweden, Ukraine; England, Germany

Whoever comes through to the final from the top half really has earned it. Rather be in England's place than Croatia's.

On paper there is no reason why we can't reach the final.

I wish I could remember the reasoning behind people wanting England to be runners up
Spain and Sweden were expected to be the other way around, which would even it up a bit and make the route to the semi a bit easier. But top half would still look tougher, and this way England gets to play at home.
I do think people think more about reputation rather than the quality of the current team.

The current Spanish and German teams really aren't very good and the fact that a different set of players won previous tournaments is irrelevant

Let's hope it doesn't go to penalties...

    England 1 - 0 Germany.

England fans do my head in 'It's Coming Home' to 'Southgate Out' depending on the 90 minutes. Moan constantly about not winning anything and then when winning moan constantly about the style of football. Get behind the team you melts.

To be fair I was born in April 1968 and we've not even reached a final in my lifetime so we've got something to moan about.

If everyone just says it's all great until we lose then you get the obvious response "you weren't complaining when we beat the Czech Republic" - so I'm getting my objection to the tactics in now in the hope I'm proved wrong. Doesn't stop me getting behind the team or looking forwards to beating Germany. We have the players to do it and when we do the draw opens up.

Is anyone suggesting Southgate is a good manager? He managed to get Middlesbrough relegated and largely got the England job through internal promotions.

What is unfortunate with this bloated format is England really have not played any team of comparable competition since the world cup, with the possible exception of the depleted Croatia.

I can't think of a competitive match they've played since the World Cup semis where they were not the substantial favourites on paper.

It is a bit of a shame that there is a fairly large risk of being one and done in competitive matches.

He did pretty well in the World Cup that one time.

Not great to watch at the moment though.

England lost to Belgium twice, beat Tunisia in injury time and Colombia on penalties. They did beat Panama who lost all their matches and Sweden though.

    I'm unconvinced.

Not sure that's down to the format, more that England got one of the easier groups. Would you make the same point if England had ended up in a swap with France?

They blitzed Spain with pace in this game although probably haven't hit those heights again.

A midfield of Barkley Dier and Winks !!!!

From the stats sounds like we played on the break, were clinical and rode our luck a bit.

another way of putting it is that we always lose to the first good team we play.

No disgrace in that but we need to accept that we are a top 8 team and will lose when we meet a top 4 team.

Look at the timing of the goals. 3-0 up after just 29 mins. There was no need to do anything but sit back and play on the break after that.

The fabled Euro 96 team only had one good win against Holland.

Drew with Switzerland, squeeked past Scotland after they missed a penalty, drew with Spain and won on penalties, drew with Germany and lost on penalties.

2 wins and a draw so far. What's not to like.

One thing this tournament has shown me is has little attention I pay to football these days. There are quite a few of the England squad I hadn't heard of and didn't have a clue who they play for.

How about this for an England 11 you never knew had been called up - all been in squads under the current manager albeit most didn't play.

I have a similar situation with the T20 cricket, has players who will never get near the test side and I've no idea who they are.

I have found football manager a great way to stay in touch without following the leagues etc day in day out.

I always struggle with the lack of jeopardy in football - it's on so often with the top clubs playing 50 odd games a year I can't either commit (as cycling comes first!) and I find the whole club myopia offputting.

But football manager is a great great game - you get to know all the players really well in terms of their strengths, weaknesses etc and it tends to try and reflect what is going on in the leagues tactically. Obviously it's a simulation game so you take it all with a pinch of salt, but I'd say I recognise more players than not in the tournament, especially the under 19s as they are goldust in that game.

Absolutely, there are definitely more players in the English squad that I'd not heard of, than ones that I had (I recognised more players in the French squad I think) ...

One upon a time I loved football, but I've only watched the two main international tournaments since Sky took over the national game / the Premier League started.

I used the benefit of hindsight to sign Ryan Giggs from the youths on a version of Championship Manager that was a few years old. Ended up having to drop him as his performances were consistently poor.

if in real life your video game player shags his brother and beats up his own wife does it impact your virtual team?

In the modern football manager it does sort of simulate players with certain reputations doing things off the pitch that affect on the pitch.
