Once Italy had won with 5 mins to go, I left to do something else, but I was told that Jonathan Davies had said that if Wales got that converted try and a losing bonus point, they wouldn't get the wooden spoon. Did he really say that, or was it misheard in the wishful thinking house in Wales?

HeSomeone said it, and it was wishful thinking on his part. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
Someone said it but I don't think it was him, I think it was the main commentator.

Ah OK. Pretty weird to get that confused. My father in law thought he had a small crumb of comfort until he realised it was nonsense.

Yeah, I was there thinking I'd worked out that Wales had to win and Italy get nothing to avoid the spoon.

it was Andrew Cotter

Thought it was but couldn’t get it out of my head that he’s a golf commentator.

Well no wonder, easy mistake if you’re a golf commentator although no complaints about his bias 😁
I know him from his YT channel mrandrewcotter with his dogs Olive and Mabel.

Saw the end of England v Italy women. It feels completely pointless, even with a player short and then another yellow towards the end they nilled the Italians and scored themselves

As with football, mens rugby has been played since the 1800s. It'll take a while until increased participation rates, more teams, younger kids playing etc etc make the women's game more competitive. Don't forget that Italy have only just started registering wins in the men's 6N. It's not completely pointless, it's just that the women's game is at an early stage of development.

True, it’s just that the current gulf feels huge. Having a player short for a chunk of the game should have been a bit of a leveller. I’m not sure where Unions that are already struggling to adequately finance the pro game are going to find the extra to raise the women’s teams to a competitive level.

Yep it'll take time but having it televised helps and it will grow and generate income and attract sponsors. Look how many people now turn up to watch women's football matches compared to a few years ago. Same is true of cycling.

Should have watched Bath get a nice BP win against Sale

I did and it was a very competitive, exciting game.
With regard to the woman’s 6 nations. I am not sure seeing a professional woman’s team demolish their amateur opponents is particularly fair.
Besides, there are not enough hours in the day to watch all the rugby coverage available, never mind cycling and all the other sports.
One has to be selective.

Well it does happen fairly regularly in mens rugby. NZ almost put 100 on Italy in the group stages of the world cup. They also nilled Uruguay, Scotland put 84 unanswered points on Romania, Wales beat Australia 40-6 etc etc but yes I see you put semi professional, these things hopefully level up as time goes on although smaller nations are still given a raw deal in the men's game.

Rees-Zammit gets a chance with the Kansas City Chiefs - one step closer to being on at least the practice squad for next season. Fair play to him.

I heard this morning that he may even make "the team" (as opposed to the practice squad) - it would be a remarkable transistion if true

If he does that this year, it would be a great achievement. He would become an "extra" 17th player in the practice squad because he came through the international player, so only has to show promise. I think he can then be put into the proper squad three times. To get into the main squad proper would be quite a risk for the team.

Just did some (fairly minimal) "research" . . . even if only on the practice squad, he'd be earning close to £500K per year!
Wilier Izoard XP0 -
I read it was about £200K, but that's still about what he was getting at Gloucester...

Even better if he is taken on as a kicker. Walk on, kick the ball, run off, pocket £200k.

I got the figure from Telegraph website - my annual salary calculation was wrong as it sounds like he'll "only" get his £9,500 a week during the season
"Based on figures from 2023, should Rees-Zammit be placed on the practice squad, the absolute minimum salary he would make would be $12,000 (£9,500) per week, coming to a total of $216,000 over an NFL season (£170,000). Should Rees-Zammit make the final 53-man roster, then the minimum salary for a rookie is $750,000 (£594,350) per year.
Telegraph Sport reported back in January that Rees-Zammit’s final salary with Gloucester was £225,000 per season, with Rees-Zammit earning extra money from his appearance fees playing for Wales"

Harry Mallinder might be doing that as a punter. Bunch of GAA players also up to be kickers. I love that they have specialists not just for kicking, but for each different type of kick.

Utter incompetence from the officials in yesterday's quins vs Bath match. Herbst allowed to serve less than 7 minutes of his sin bin. Quins were leaking points like a sieve and should have been down to 13 for 3-4 minutes. Bath came baclk from 40-3 down, and got back to 40-36. The time keeping cock up probably cost them the win and in a league so tight could be the difference between 2nd and missing the play offs......
And the RFU has the cheek to apologise to BOTH teams!

Not to mention that Quinn’s third try came off a penalty that should have been a knock on to Bath.

True.
Add in the TMO controvesy last weekend when the quins captain should have had a second yellow for his late illegal hit on Farrell, and therefore would not have been playing on Saturday either....
In a league at tight as it is this year, Quins have been given a massive advantage due to incompetence of the officials.

Like most on here, I am no expert but the consensus, having read a few US articles and fan forums, is that the Chiefs have a definite plan for him and there is a strong chance he makes the squad. The suggestion is they would not have given him a 3 year contract with bonus and guaranteed salary otherwise. Totally agree, if he does make it to full squad that would be an incredible achievement.
Like most, I thought he would be back in Union in 2 years, not so sure now...

On the subject of bad referees we had a right one today. He was poor throughout with things like letting the opposition charge through the line out before the jumper was back on the ground. However, in the second half our tight head was carrying the ball completely upright (and he must be well over 6 foot tall) their player just took him out with a shoulder barge to the head that knocked him out cold. He was treated for 20 minutes or so before being stretchered off (luckily there is no serious injury). The ref went straight for his pocket to pull out the obvious red card that was required..:and gave a yellow. Even the opposition supporters couldn’t understand, there was absolutely no mitigation, he didn’t consult his assistants although both of them spoke to him during the delay (obviously don’t know if they were suggesting he’d got it wrong).
The opposition also went passive when the player was in the bin which I thought meant they had to sacrifice a player but they kept 14 on the field throughout. We still won comfortably though luckily.
