Based on that I wouldn’t have too many problems avoiding them. Maybe they listened too hard to the RFU people Laurentian mentioned above who say it’s a game of evasion 🤣pblakeney said:
Okay, you want to go face to face with those 3 players and tell them that? 😉Pross said:
Not necessarily, a lot of them the player steps and jinks away from the defence. On that try he ran through three tacklers who should have stopped him.pblakeney said:
You want to tell Gareth Edwards that. 😉Pross said:For that first van der Merwe try any kind of tackling would have helped.
That applies to all long range tries.0 -
FWIW the tackling on the Edwards try was terrible but it was a much less defensive orientated game back then (the forward pass would have got it called back these days too shame as that would be).0

ITV commentary as bad as ever. I know BBC isn’t exactly brilliant these days but still way better than this (until they hand over to Sonia for the post-match interviews).

ITV appear to prefer the quantity over quality approach."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
Nice to see a penalty try given there. It might stop these cynical penalties on the try line if it happened more often.1

I was thinking the same - more yellow cards, more penalty tries. Fewer warnings that "do that for a sixth time and there'll be trouble ".Pross said:Nice to see a penalty try given there. It might stop these cynical penalties on the try line if it happened more often.

Don’t fancy Wales chances in Italy this year.0

Good game, shame Allan missed the long range penalty with 7 or so to go.1

I think he was wary of taking too much and kicking it dead but they weren’t great. A bit of a slice on the first one but the second one should have been simple with the angle he had.ddraver said:Were the last 2 kicks to touch just rubbish or was there a plan..?
Italy were a bit like Wales yesterday in that they had chances but just lacked the composure to take them. The better teams will play the extra phase rather than forcing the pass or going to the boot when they don’t break the defence. The main difference is that it always felt like Ireland would come back if needed whereas I’m not sure the French would have.

Didn't see the Wales v Ireland game but looks like Ireland went with the form book and Wales are probably about where people thought they would be.
England looked better than of late but still not good enough to beat Scotland on their current form which is about what I thought would happen (although I wanted an England win)
The back end of last 6 Nations, the win over Australia and the performace yesterday are beginning to suggest that we now have an Italy that can still be competing after 80 minutes - looking forward to their next game. France not the unstoppable force I expected them to be in the year that they host the RWC but I also expect that they will come very very good before the end of the 6N.Wilier Izoard XP0 -

All 3 have been great over the years but none really earned their places based on the Ireland match and are starting to look past their prime so I think it’s a good move. I also wasn’t comfortable with the way AWJ failed his HIA then was deemed fit to play.ddraver said:1 -
In other news Charlie Faulkner, one third of the famous Pontypool Front Row, has died at the age of 81. I just missed his playing days, Price was the only one still playing when I first started watching, but he was a legend of the 70s game in Wales and around the world.0

I saw the three play together many times. What the regions would give now to get crowds on the banking in Ponty park, back in the day."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
New coach, but same old bone of contention.
Borthwick gives Owen Farrell both the captaincy and the number 10 shirt.
I imagine a fair percentage of England supporters will be tearing their hair out."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -

If Farrell can't get the backs moving then Smith should get his chance.
Better selection this week than last, with Ben Youngs ditched (about 4 years too late).0 -
Ben Youngs has had more lives than a cat, thanks in the main to his replacements failing to live up to expectations in the limited opportunities they have been granted.Dorset_Boy said:

As for the Welsh team, at least Gatland has been true to his word in that reputation counts for nowt, this time around.
Baptism of fire for that novice back row though.

France are so loose. How many times have they passed to Irish players?
Ireland on top though.

Another terrible decision by Wayne.
Keenan had loads of time to avoid taking out the French kicker. Yellow and penalty where the ball landed every day.0 -
The second half is very scrappy compared to the first.
It’s what we see far too often as it’s extremely hard to maintain the quality when there’s a raft of substitutions.

Ireland deserved winners but both teams will be feeling their bruises after that encounter.
At times today, it sounded like ITV had employed two fanboys from the terraces to commentate.
Embarrassing."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
Ireland very impressive. France a bit off colour, but some of that due to the relentless Irish pressure.
So only Ireland and Scotland can win the Grand Slam!
Episode 2 to start soon!0 -
From the replays he saw at the time I don't think you could say his foot definitely scraped the ground. Did look like it was grounded on the line though.blazing_saddles said:Wayne Barnes just gave Ireland a belated Christmas present.
