Gutted for Degenkolb, anyone know what happened?

No idea, but a huge shame for him. Always sad when someone is DNF on stage 1.

Pinot. How fragile do we think he is?

He looked very affected by that crash.
Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.

He makes Princess Tom look like a dour, wet and cold Norwegian...

He's not gonna win,and it's got nothing to do with rain or crashes.
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

He’s one of my favourite riders, I’m genuinely sad he’s out so soon, would have loved to see him challenging for a stage win somewhere.

Kirby is still annoying. His first incorrect fact was before the Depart Real, when he claimed Menton was between Nice and Monaco, when its the other side of Monaco and last town before Italy.
Failed to spot Sivakov was down during the crash despite a replay.
Then after Dumoulin spoke to the rider from Astana he started gesticulating back at him, which wasnt really in a "i accept we were wrong manor" but didnt let that stop him claiming that was the gist of it.

having said that, ive seen pictures of sport at work with no commentary, and talking over it really isnt an easy job, and thats with no producer shouting down my ear either.

Hoping we dont get any withdrawals overnight and we get a dry stage tomorrow. Might get an early sprint for green then some decent GC action

He did finish, but outside the time limit. Doesn't answer your question though.

    Yay! MY MAN!

Maybe he didn't win KBK but he's got another tour stage and the yellow jersey!

I think another Tour stage and the yellow jersey trumps KBK, don't you?

Translation: Here is the cause of many of the falls today or at least it seems so.

The advertising Caravan of #TDF2020 Specifically, the soap X-Tra Total threw soap bombs that were left on the Highway.
With the rain, the track was transformed into a skating rink

So now rider safety is less of a priority than selling soap

But was that pissed off because he knows he's injured, or pissed off just for the crash?
His positioning should have been much better, like Roglic, Bernal etc.

They were able to follow advice and wash their hands afterwards though, so...

    This suggests a nasty crash.

Phil Gilbert off to hospital too for checks.
Bad day in the Lotto office.

Closer to tears if you ask me.

  • He's cracked his knee and shoulder and they are already vulnerable. Worse Gaudu banged his lower back and Mollard got a bad knee impact. Also other injuries in team so that's f.d it up
  • With Degenkolb Twitter suggests that he crashed at the same time as Ewan, then turned himself inside out to pace him back before dropping off. Allegedly now off to hospital for x-rays, so hope he's okay.

  • The team appealed but it was rejected. Seems rather harsh considering the conditions of the day.

I don't think you can make an exception today or you set a precedent for later in the race

Tour's always been harsh with enforcing the cut off. I remember Ted King being kicked off having missed the cut-off in a TTT, alone with a knacked shoulder and on a road bike, by just 7 seconds. Think there was a bit of a hoo-hah about the official time in that case as well, just to add to it.
  • Valls taken to hospital too. Think he got caught up in the crash at 3km to go, as he's been given the same time.

    You what?

It's not as if they haven't done it in the past.
    Heck, Paul Sherwen for one.

Everyone finished. Sivakov thirteen minutes down with two others.

Not too bad considering he looked very keen to get in the car after his second fall.
  • Full (?) list of fallers and injuries here: https://cyclingtips.com/2020/08/the-tour-de-france-ice-rink-who-crashed-and-whos-hurt/

Quite the list; suggests Valls has a leg injury and is definitely out.
  • If the mayhem has been caused by the soap then ASO and UCI might be in trouble. A rider go-slow might happen, especially with the general unhappiness of safety at other events this year. Amateur hour needs to stop.

I thought they weren't having a publicity caravan this year.

"What if 1999's Passage du Gois... but a whole stage?"

Fortunately not the same impact though, at least in terms of time losses.
