Was worried Root would run out of support but Foakes did a good job for him. Decent win in the end but still far too reliant on Root to get the runs. Very happy for him to get the ton and 10,000 runs after a tough couple of years.

No. The 3rd best team in rankings and current Test Champs (for what that particular accolade is worth)? Only a fool would of though they would be blown away.

England won by 5 wickets having done the very best to chuck it all away on the 1st day.

It wasn't a great performance, but then the Kiwis will be not be happy with their first session.

Ended up being a better game than expected at the close of day 1 and has given England a much need boost of confidence. Just wish there was more than the two tests against NZ

EDIT: Turns out there are three tests.

England still need to find another player who can bat. I enjoyed Lords having all the costs today, but none of the revenue as they have to refund the tickets. The enjoyment is because they were very greedy with ticket prices this year.

After the first few overs Iof the match I think it was fair to hope for a win, but England managed to get into losing positions several times and still win, so well done them.

I doubt many expected England to get within 14 runs of that NZ target but it now feels like they actually missed an opportunity to get a decent lead. Final 5 wickets wrapped up in just over an hour this morning means there's still a match on here with all result options still possible, draw is probably favourite but the pitch is doing more now.

If one team can hold onto their catches they're in with a good chance

Ball all of a sudden moving all over the place, and was spinning nicely for Bracewell. I think there's a good chance of a result here.

Free entry to Trent Bridge tomorrow if anyone is in the vicinity.

Looks like it will be a good day as well - any result still possible.

Annoying final wicket runs, seems to happen quite often when England are in these situations.

Why they didn't take the new ball and aim at the stumps! Anyway, game on!!

Lees looks like he might get a half century before anyone else scores a run here.

Yeah, I think they'll go into saving the match mode soon. The win is looking the least likely result for me.

Stokes might as well just try and hit 200 in 20 overs.

Now that they're in this mess, yes. Other options were probably available.

Safe to say the draw isn't very likely now.

Feels like s**t or bust as if they lose one of these plus Foakes there isn't much left to try to hold on for the draw.

Why can't Bairstow bat like this in 'normal' circumstances?

Short boundaries, old ball and flattish pitch. Change the last two things and he will be back to struggling.

England's second fastest Test boundary. Stokes is injured so boundaries or nothing really, could probably retire hurt and only come back in an emergency.

Bairstow is going to hole out soon and the match is still in the balance then.

His current strike rate is 145. They've been bowling as if he's going to hole out, and he's just said thank you very much.

50 off 55 balls for Stokes and he's the slow one.
