Should Mark Cavendish swallow his pride and retire?

I'd guess most would be sprinters as visits to other countries will be at the start of the race, so usually flat and most would have been riding since about 2000 when foreign visits became more common. On that basis, I'll hazard a guess at Kittel and Greipel being two of them. Both have definitely won TDF stages outside of France. Oh, and what about Cancellara? I remember he won the 2007 prologue. There must be a fair chance that there were other prologues in other countries he won.RichN95. said:If you want another annoying quiz - name seven riders who have won Grand Tour stages in six different countries. Cavendish is one. (I have a list if seven from elsewhere - I haven't checked it and there may be others).

When I tuned in this morning and saw 40 new posts, I thought I had clicked on the Cake Stop......................having read them, it turned out that I had.
Anyhow, carry on. I always like a good quiz."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -

Yeah, it's a mix of sprinters - Cavendsih, Kittel, Greipel and McEwan - and time triallist/all rounders - Cancellara, Merckx (isn't it always) and surprisingly Dumoulin who has only won nine stages.Twitter: @RichN950 -

Nah, course he should not retire. What kind of question is that?0
-
Hopefully at least when he does retire it'll be much more on his own terms, rather due to illness/injury. 🤞0

Modern day sprints - you're better off having the top "pilot" over the top sprinter.
He needs to go somewhere with a very good lead out.0 -

Apart from winning Romandie, Catalunya and the Giro d'Italia this year so far.ddraver said:The Bora/Sam Bennett contract has played out exactly as everyone other than Bora and Sam Bennett could see it would so maybe there?

Is Israel a possible destination? Plenty of money to pay him and support riders?2

Ineos can't be completely out of the question.
They have Ellingworth back there as well now - great publicity, and you could argue if Bernal is not back to full fitness/form by next July, that they would be better to target stage wins and forego any genuine hopes of topping the GC.
That would clearly be a massive change to their approach to the tour.Felt F70 05 (Turbo)

They've got Viviani to not win sprints for the next couple of seasons.daniel_b said:Ineos can't be completely out of the question.

Viviani is there in the "mentor" role, no? Sharpen Ethan Hayter's top end and give a few tipsWarning No formatter is installed for the format2

Don't know, sounds like a long contract for that and doesn't feel like they've raced together much. I don't see Hayter as a sprinter and his most obvious flaw is bunch positioning that I would have thought Rowe could sort out.No_Ta_Doctor said:Viviani is there in the "mentor" role, no? I thought he was there to work with Ganna on the track for the next OlympicsNo_Ta_Doctor said:Viviani is there in the "mentor" role, no? Sharpen Ethan Hayter's top end and give a few tips

Poss off to Alpecin if you believe the rumours0
-
Interesting. I thought he'd be more likely to go a Specialized sponsored team. They were rumoured to be paying his wages (or a fair chunk) for the contract at QS.amrushton said:Poss off to Alpecin if you believe the rumours
Although after his showings in last year's tour and of course his form of late, he's a fair bit more bankable now!
Unless of course Alpecin are switching from Canyon to Specialized, although that's unlikely with the MvdP tie up I'd have thought

No way Aplecin and Canyon will part ways whilst MvdP is there. I'm sure Cav would love to ride an Aeroad though!0

One of the commentary teams on the tour mentioned that EF were rumoured to be one of a few teams interested in Cav for next year.0

That would make sense. They don’t really have any marquee riders at the moment. Although there was also talk of Carapaz going there.commuterlegs said:One of the commentary teams on the tour mentioned that EF were rumoured to be one of a few teams interested in Cav for next year.

EF feels like a good fit for Cavendish culturally, if you know what I mean?
I hope he gets to decide when to quit though, rather than simply not getting a contract.0 -
I've read inner ring on twitter referring to this with confidence so assume it's a done deal?RichN95. said:
