I see Kate Hoey (now a non-affiliated peer), has been rewarded for her Brexit support with the plum job of trade envoy to Ghana.0

I couldn't work out how Stephen Timms got one of those jobs.0

Ah, do it appears that Beefy owns a wine business in Australia. I'm sure that his business won't benefit from this at all.0

it's funny, with the fact cricket is beyond the sky paywall and the fact he stopped playing cricket almost 30 years ago when I was barely out of nappies, I know him better for being the random brexiter who got a peerage than I do him as a sportsman.0
-
You missed his charity work then?rick_chasey said:it's funny, with the fact cricket is beyond the sky paywall and the fact he stopped playing cricket almost 30 years ago when I was barely out of nappies, I know him better for being the random brexiter who got a peerage than I do him as a sportsman.

It's notable. I don't like him as a pundit and suspect I wouldn't like him in person, but his work for leukemia has been outstanding.rick_chasey said:Yup

Am reminded of the time in my first job I was told to speak to all the equity sales traders at all the banks to get a sense of what’s what in the market and who was open to moves.
I called this guy like I did everyone else, Josh, and he seemed rather confused on the call.
It was Josh Lewsey, which meant nothing to me but my colleagues were laughing afterwards. Turns out he was quite the England rugby player!

You really do seem to have a very narrow spectrum of knowledge. Botham's biggest claim to fame was Shredded Wheat adverts. Josh Lewsey only retired 10 years ago.0

And when he gave his 'acceptance speech' for his Honorary Doctorate at Exeter, to his credit, he used all the time to talk about the charity, not himself. I know that might not seem like much, but you'd be surprised what people give away about themselves in such speeches.0 -
Botham was also famous for smoking the 'erbPross said:You really do seem to have a very narrow spectrum of knowledge. Botham's biggest claim to fame was Shredded Wheat adverts. Josh Lewsey only retired 10 years ago.

If you don’t watch any cricket or rugby at all, how would you know?Pross said:You really do seem to have a very narrow spectrum of knowledge. Botham's biggest claim to fame was Shredded Wheat adverts. Josh Lewsey only retired 10 years ago.
Cancellara could walk into my office tomorrow and only two of us would even notice and I only I would give a sh!t

I don't think you have to intend to watch cricket to have seen clips of 'Botham's' Ashes.rick_chasey said:

It's like me not knowing who Pele is because I have little interest in football and he played before I was born. For a history graduate you seem to have very little interest in the world before your time.0 -
I think people generally over-estimate how 'big' things were when they were young, because one is impressionable then.Pross said:

Hand-on-heart, I couldn't tell you if Botham is better known as a bowler or a batter, and I've not seen any clips of his.

That's understandable, because in tests, he's the third highest England wicket taker of all time, and 21st highest England run scorer of all time. Could field a bit too, 4th most catches of any England player (excluding wicket keepers).rick_chasey said:

So in terms of capabilities he was a bit like a Freddie Flintoff, in that he was just really good at most things in cricket? Sounds like he was probably better.0

Flintoff was just one of many who was described as "the new Botham"rick_chasey said:So in terms of capabilities he was a bit like a Freddie Flintoff, in that he was just really good at most things in cricket? Sounds like he was probably better.
Think of Botham as Merckx and Flintoff as Nibali0 -

I'm not sure that's true. I'm aware of many sporting events from before I was born even if I don't really follow the sport as, despite TV coverage being fairly limited, they tend to get shown quite regularly e.g. the famous Ali fights, Borg in tennis or Wade winning Wimbledon (OK I was born then but very young). The 1981 Ashes serious highlights get shown every time England play the Aussies.rick_chasey said:

As for Josh Lewsey, I'm pretty sure even you are old enough to remember England winning the Rugby World Cup and he played internationally for another 5 or 6 years after than.0 -
Played football as well. I think he had a few first team games for Scunthorpe United.rick_chasey said:So in terms of capabilities he was a bit like a Freddie Flintoff, in that he was just really good at most things in cricket? Sounds like he was probably better.

And his son played rugby professionally (made the England squad but never capped) having briefly played professional cricket for Hampshire. He also used to live in my village so I would see the old man driving through in his Merc every now and then. The grandson also plays rugby and has recently been capped for Wales.webboo said:

He's no Ian Botham. I think a majority of people would not have heard of Josh Lewsey.Pross said:

But everyone in England was such a massive rugby supporter for a few weeks in 2003!kingstongraham said:

I once met Keith Wood at a party, asked him what he did and he said play rugby, I asked him what he did other than that. I suspect he was talking to me because I was the only bloke there not desparately trying to talk to him.
My wife once met Anil Kumble at a cricket match (Guildford) and just thought he was a twat who had gone to the match in a replica shirt0
