In 2012 Man Utd signed up their latest shirt sponsor for £53m a year. The Chelsea shirt sponsorship is £40m per year. Hard to say of course, but I'd imagine that because the team is usually named after the sponsor, that Sky got better exposure per year than Yokohama tyres, as shirt sponsorship actually requires the shirt to be shown, versus the team being named.

I expect that they've probably got the funding for 2020 mostly in place already. Sky have said the will honour contracts for 2020, which includes the high earners, other sponsors are staying and the shortfall will be a bargain to any stop gap sponsor. That will give Brailsford more breathing space than some are saying.

Think cycling doesn't command the same amounts of finance as Football.
Also, why would a Sponsor be a second sponsor for the price it could be a principle Sponsor? Thomas and Froome aren't quite at the age to guarantee a tour win but as Sky has proved, they can pull rabbits out of hats.
Think the UCI only guarantees a Sponsor should keep the Team in finance for a year. After that a Sponsor can walk away (not 100% sure on that but think that's the understanding)

Apparently there's a report in Gazzetta saying that Comcast are willing to secure 70% of their contribution to the budget for 2020 and 2021 and the team will be bought from Sky by a wealthy 'American with a passion for cycling'.

I say 'apparently' as the report is not online, I saw a report repeating the report. I'd file it under 'dubious' myself

Wouldn't have thought he would have the cash or could attract enough sponsors?

I'm not sure they are comparable. Surely the exposure a football shirt sponsor gets is a million times more than a cycling team?

Without looking it up can you name the sponsors of Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal or Tottenham?

However, what football does have is a global reach and hospitality/tickets?

It's the global reach - but I don't watch any football, and I can picture Chevrolet, Etihad and Emirates.

No mention yet of the rumour that Team Sky might merge with Israel Cycling Academy... that could take some of the vitriol to a whole new level.

Which was sort of my point. Unless you properly follow the sport (and admittedly many do) then you'll have no exposure to the brand, while in cycling the team name is the sponsor so has the ability to drift into the consciousness of a more general sports fan (of which there are also many).

In the UK, Team Sky obviously has the name recognition. But how many non cycling fans would know about Quickstep and Movistar despite them having sponsored teams for (relatively) ever?

Putting money in just to get a logo on a shirt is a bit old school, or French if you like. A recent Cycling Podcast had a bit on the more modern thinking on marketing deals, the money in and the net ROIs, think it was with the guy from Science in Sport but might have been Rapha... worth a listen.

It was Science in Sport. It was very interesting.
  • I just hope they get a sponsor so we don't have another Team IT4i , Blanco, or Highroad situation.

Imagine what that mob would come up with as they "Branding"... urgh

There's lots of talk about the team ending or continuing with a reduced budget. It would be typical of DB to come back with a bigger budget!!

That's easy! Sharp, Brother, Crown, JVC and Holsten 8)

To the extent that a couple of months ago I passed a flooring place with some Quickstep banners out front and I thought "oh, must be something cycling related going on" took me a few minutes to click to the fact (pun intended) that it was just a flooring shop selling flooring

What a disaster that Cantona kung fu kick incident must have been for Sharp. I never see their VCRs in stores these days!

Also illuminating how afterwards Birnie and Moore seemed to auto revert to the old ways of thinking about sponsorship.

I bet you had to Google Keith Curle or Paul Dickov to get Brother though.

Haha, nope, I really am just that sad that I could recall them! My lot should have Courage back on their shirts but none of them would live up to the billing at the minute.

TUI give an extra boost of energy when required for fatigued peeps. They do cycling holidays too as well as the summer winter fun.

We already have Sunweb, Team TUI!

Reading? The team I should support as someone from Berkshire, but don't because they were crap in the 80s (and I'm too young for Robin Friday)

That be them! I'm far too young for Friday too. Grew up in Amazingstoke and Reading were our closest league team I could watch. First game was the Simod cup final, a fine 4-1 win at Wembley. All been kinda downhill since then.

That would be something. I see Sky have learned nothing of the culture of pro cycling with this sentence

"Sky has said everyone at the team would be "properly looked after."

surely as a sponsor you pull the plug during a Grand Tour and don't pay the last few months wages leaving riders to make their own way home at the end of an event?
