So some teams shifting from discs back to rims for climbing? If there really is a weight penalty to discs (I thought the bikes struggled to get up to the minimum weight) is there an issue with the location of the weight? Lower centre of mass etc?

I suppose they are more interested in how to go fast than how to slow down, so perhaps the consideration of discs *perhaps* being a better option in the wet for stopping purposes is low down the radar for the pro teams.
If you clip anything with rim braked wheels you'll probably glide past. If you're in the mountains with nutters running up alongside there is a chance of snagging on the disk and getting caught up. You would think froome would ride with "spartacus/gladiator wheels.

Gilbert, Alaphilippe, Impey, Sagan, GVA.... That would be a cracking break in a one day race.

I don't quite see how disc brakes could interfere with another bike, it's not as if they protrude any more than pedals, rear mech, bars etc.

But anyway, I suppose if there is a braking advantage to discs for non-racers that doesn't need to be reflected in what racers use - they are interested in going fast and not stopping (as much), we are more interested in going quite fast but being able to stop quickly and safely if we need to.

Anyway, has anyone counted up the number of discs in the peloton today vs the flat days?

    GvA in the break?

    Lad.

I don’t think him and Gilbert have been more than 15m of each other the entire Tour. No love lost there.

Dumoulin has learned his lesson and not drafting the team car, he's opted to hold onto it instead

Those mechanics are nuts sticking fingers close to moving wheels - I've still got a black and shattered nail from getting finger trapped between the chain and chainring of my track bike whilst oiling the chain a few weeks back so it makes me wince seeing them do that.

Groenewegen going out the back already, long day ahead for him.

Calmejane bored riding at the pace of a bunch of Classics specialists so rides off with DiDa rider. Sagan slipping out the back of the break.

Izaguirre also slipping off the back of the break, surprisingly.

Tell me about it, thought I'd lost my fingertip. I didn't realise how flat a finger can compress.

Molard takes the Croix Fry ahead of Taaramae with the remainder of the break including GVA about 20 seconds back. Sagan and the rest of the original break around another 30 seconds back.

Ned commenting that we have the somewhat unusual site of the yellow jersey in a break - yep, last time that happened was way back on Sunday!

That was an attack rather than a break, surely?

Doesn't an attack create a break? He finished in a group of 3 off the front of the main bunch, surely that's a break?

Nah I'd say that's an attack, and that's different. Like Froome attacking a MTF in Yellow isn't a break

Interesting semantics. So a break is just a bit of fun to liven the stage up before the real racing starts?

They've layed down a new surface on the Glieres, that must have cost a bit.

Didn't catch what was said, but French fans shouting something caused Rowe to stick his tongue out & Moscon to give them verbal

The break is racing, thought rarely successful.

I think the real difference is that a break will have most of the peloton chasing it for a long distance and have little chance of success, whereas an attack will often come from a smaller group over a shorter distance, and will have a correspondingly higher chance of success. You also can't get a 12 man attack. The nuances convey important context about what's happening and what was intended.

That's how I've always used it. The Break. Other groups forming off the front of the peloton are formed by attacks or forcing selections.
