That stage threatened much, but delivered very little.
The outsider of the group just allowed to ride away, while the rest "finesse", whatever that means.
Poels with what looked like a major misjudgment. Huge slide that.

Molard may have been the outsider of that elite group but his climbing skills over the last few years have been noticeable. Very smooth - one of those climbers that doesn't 'fuss' on the bike Never a big win but the last 2 years he's hung on to the first group in the mountains much longer than some other bigger names . He was a bargain buy for FdJ - who should never have got rid of Geniez - but I bet Molard was half the price . A moderate tester but on any ITT with a climb he's good . A good GT rider to have in a team

Cyclingnews ticker has riders dropping like flies today, race over for Dan Martin, Demare, Kristoff and about 6 others. Break being kept on a short leash as it contains de Marchi who is only 2:36 down

Bahrain Merida split the bunch, Wellens is on the wrong side of that but not too far back to the main group

Crash on a narrow twisty descent, BMC rider from the break (Roche or de Marchi) has fallen down quite a big drop

de Marchi it was but has climbed out with some assistance, that looked pretty worrying for a minute!

Another crash, in the bunch this time. Ag2r rider looking thoroughly miserable sat on the floor

Great ride by Yates but what were those shades he was wearing. They reminded me of Dame Edna Everage.

Stage 8 blown apart on the first climb.
Alaphillipe, Fulgsang, Fraille have 40 seconds over a bunch of 20 containing the favourites

    Live on various stations.
Alaphillipe off the front by less than a minute with Fraile.
Fuglsang has crashed. MS chasing and the weather, as reported, is poo.

Edit: Fraile now dropping a tired looking Alaphilippe.
Soler has attacked from the bunch.

Riders dodging huge puddles and rockslides as they descend to Nice.
MTS and BAH chasing virtual leader Marc Soler, who has de la Cruz and Fraile for company.
    Weather still poo.

Yates miss out to Solar while De la Cruz bags the stage. The time gaps always disguise how good the racing is.
Thought De la Cruz had done too much but he was obviously very strong.

Bonus seconds proved critical. Yates took +1s at the first intermediate, Soler took +3s at the second intermediate and +2s at the finish.

Good recovery from Yates though, he looked ready to give up when he got gang-banged by the Izagirres

Just caught up with highlights on ES. Weather foul but the racing was as good as last year wih GC coming down to a matter of seconds. In a way the Izagirres crash nearly worked in Yates' favour as he could try to get back time in a chasing group, but to no avail.

This final stage never fails to produce all out action.
As for taking the GC with a long range attack: young Marc Soler shows old man Contador how to do it.

Just checked - I didn’t realise it was that similar - De la Cruz & Soler, with Bertie in the three up.

Fantastic finish. Pleased De la Cruz won - big effort and Fraile would dick him in a sprint 9 times out of 10, so cracking ride from him. Feel for Yates a bit, but fair play to Soler - took the bonuses and deserved it
