Sounds like we could do a BR group ride though :)

Let me see... I organised one... 2013 or 2014, can't remember... there were 5 of us (myself, DRLodge, Paul27something, Charlie Potatoes and one of his friends)... would have been 6 but BobbinoGS got lost on his way in. It was a good route in Warwickshire/Oxfordshire and a good day out was had by all

I subsequently tried to organise a second but it proved a non starter...

Well - we did that CX one in Kingston way back ... er ... oh - and it rained ... :) Nice expresso in the Kingston marketplace though - needed that :)

Yes, I capsized in a massive puddle on top of the common...
There was a stall doing chicken tikka wraps in the square... wonder if it's still there...

Oh yes - forgot your little oops ... probably because I was struggling on the stock "CX" tyres - ie mostly smooth - on the very slightly slippery terrain ...

That's something I'd be interested in, however it would be better in summer.

You are very welcome to organise it, I won't have another stab at it, but might join if it's not too far...

or you can all MTFU and sign up for my Audax next July.
It starts 3 miles from the geographical centre of England, so nobody can really complain...

They’ve just canned the ride. Full refunds.

    Right decision IMO -

I was reading on the FB page that some people running cafe stops (voluntarily) had cancelled - a local farmers market had also been cancelled - they really would have been putting there neck on the line to run it.

Sensible I believe, and good to get refunds.

  • I’m gutted at the news but it sounds like the right desicion. Good to hear we’ll get full refunds though.
  • Suits me, but I'm surprised they are going with a full refund. I think they'd have been within their rights to offer a partial refund given they are going to be taking a pretty big hit.

Per there t&c's they don't have to refund at all - but then they would loose 15,000 customers - I thought at best they would give credits for future events -

I had already decided not to ride - so a refund is somewhat of a bonus
  • I'd have spirited the money away and liquidated the business. With petrol.

I'm a bit gutted but relieved at the same time. I don't really enjoy cycling in shit weather so I'm glad I don't have to now.
Refund is good so that can be spent on bike stuff now.

Looks like I'll be on Zwift on Sunday then

That's what I would have done, good job I don't work in business.

Velo South is run by a multi national sports branding company, they have Seb Coe as their CEO.
They can afford the refunds and it means that they don't get any negative PR as well.

Kudos to them for giving full refunds (although I'll believe it once its back in my account!)
Lost on prepaid hotel buy you win some you......
Refund will be handy for Mallorca in a few weeks 8)
    25th August 2013 12hrs 37mins 52.3 seconds 238km 5500mtrs FYRM Never again.
  • Shame it's postponed, nice for those of you entered you get full refunds.

Just in case you weren't aware, there's a similar-ish route Wiggle sportive on Sunday October 14th http://www.wiggle.co.uk/wiggle-super-se ... tive-2018/ (there's a 20% multibuy option for a 20% discount on 4 entries, making it £32 for the standard or epic routes).
It includes a separate hill climb event up Butser Hill on the day, which looks to be Harvesting lane.

It does beg the question why they opted to choose a date so far from mid summer, albeit the misfortune that we have such high winds is largely just bad luck.

And what will happen regarding the court case between West Sussex council (?) and the NIMBYs who were so angry at the prospect of closed roads?

I think on the fb page that has already been dealt with. correct procedures were followed and the road closures were legit
  • I was going to ride it anyway, but having spoken to my buddy who does the weather watching thing, actually I’ve decided not to. It really does look spectacularly bad.

Strong winds at the end of September into October is not unusual.... it’s almost predictable

Not this strong. My buddy reckons this is the worst he’s seen coming in, since 1987.
  • Audaxes - a lot less hassle and lot less expense.

I can dig up some charts (we call them dartboards) of far far worse lows than this one, which is already diminishing and unfortunately with the event now cancelled it will probably just end up a breezy wet day.

Really feel for you guys with the event cancelled.

And as the low then tracks through to really had salt into the wound have you looked at the forecast for Monday?

F7+8 is not unusual - nor is F9 - I've had boats on moorings at this time of year - gives you a sleepless night or two. But they're normally short lived - just a shame it's going to coincide with a weekend - yet again ...
  • ...so in the end local residents will feel like they won the battle but not the war yet. I suspect there won't be a 2019 Velosouth. They have the momentum on their side to fight any possible rescheduling. At some point local councils will realise it's just not worth all the hassle involved and will take the opportunity to pull out...

although there might be legal and ifinacial implications in doing so...

What a palaver for a bicycle ride!

Sounds like your weather-watching 'buddy' is about as well-informed as you usually are. There have been far worse weather events since 87 and while Sunday's weather looks rough, it is likely to be a long way from the apocalypse you appear to be predicting..

    From the SVS website:
Thank you to the almost 3,000 people who signed up to take part in demonstrations at three locations on the Lycra Loop on Sunday. As we know, God is on our side and your services are not required on this occasion.

BUT, Velo South will try again. And so we may have to call on your good services again in the future.

And if you were one of the thousands of people who thought long and hard about protesting on the day, but knew you could not get to the demonstration sites, or just weren’t sure about taking part in a demonstration, we would like you to think again and join us next time we have to mobilise, because we will have to mobilise again, no doubt.

Thank you to all the poster-placers; the FOI enquirers; the people who raised concerns on FaceBook; the legal-eagles; the press interviewees - thank you all.

But let’s not relax. This fight has been won, but the battle isn’t over

:):) - God is on their side!

I would have thought that now was the perfect time for SVS to initiate their stated aim of putting on a 'better' event. Sadly, it seems all they are doing in this statement is re-committing to preventing any other events of a similar nature. Bunch of liars...

    God on their side

Cancelled and full refund is best outcome for me, what with poor weather and the protesting minority (missing out on a Sunday trip to the supermarket), it was quickly losing its appeal.
Only entered as thought it was nice end of summer goal being on closed roads and all.
Don’t know much about the Sussex scenery so that wasn’t a big pull for me (I live in Derbyshire so and Sunday is pretty good really!)
Pretty sure I won’t bother if they do it in 2019 either, I think £120 is best put towards a euro sportive or Majorca trip, providing we’ll be allowed there next year !

l'etape London seems to be going ahead.

Looking at comments earlier about poor support for Velo Birmingham riders, vs my experience of l'etape Wales (as one of the last finishers, I was escorted in by a motorbike marshall, I got my medal, I got my pint of horrible alcohol free beer), it seems to me that CMS are quite poor at the support side and contingency planning considering the expense of the event. I don't think I'd sign up for any of their events.

Says the guy who has now posted on this thread under three different usernames. Is that a record?
