Superb sacrifice from Gilbert, who was meant to be the hare for the dogs to chase.
Was that really the case? Gilbert was their best chance of winning coming into the race. And Boonen looked very much like he was working for Gilbert.
Yeah my read was that Gilbert just found himself with a gap coming over that climb and decided to press on. I assume he had been expecting to get caught though.

Think you're probably right. QS tactics were "make it hard", but Gilbert made it very hard very early. Once he had a gap he must have thought he'd got it too early, but pushed on. In that sense he wasn't riding for himself but for Boonen.

Scott Thwaites good effort again in 16th. I'm sure he's got a big win in him.

I doubt he'll figure much in P-R due to that effort and missed chances for other protagonists but he may come good for Amstel Gold. What a palmares:

Just finished watching it on catch up (damned life getting in the way).

WHAT a race. Absolutely stunning ride by Gilbert.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

And only the fourth rider to win De Ronde, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Lombardia and the Worlds in their career.

That is the most "unbelievable" ride I've seen in years. Gilbert disappears for a couple of years and then a move to QS and a new special training plan has got him back to his old winning ways. I need to employ his coach.

Still wonder what exactly caused Sagans crash but what will it take for the uci to only allow barriers that don't have the feet exposed? Surely it can't be that difficult and would make it all safer anyway.

I used to think of BMC as where talent went to die. Evans and GVA bucked the trend, but what on earth were they doing with Phil Gil all this time?

You have a point about the barriers but if they had been riding in the middle of the road it would have never happened. You takes your chance.

    Paying him too much.
He's now on a low basic salary with performance related bonuses.

    +1

And, with all due respect, re Gilbert I can't agree on his ride being 'unbelievable'. He's always been total class. A few lean years recently but in great form this year; and everything went his way today. Clearly the strongest rider today but not in an eyebrow raising way.

Terpstra: the Nigel Farage of cycling... not the best at anything, likes to be seen with winners and not particularly popular. Stupid grin.

Unlike Farage, Terpstra actually wins occasionally.

He can't buy a break, can he? That's him out of Roubaix presumably.

Sounds like Roubaix could be painful.

Just re-watching the race. Gilbert rode the gully on the opposite side from where Sagan crashed, where there was plenty of room away from the crowd & barriers.

I'd imagine he was doing what Armstrong likes to do - right really close to the crowd/barriers to put his competitors off following his wheel.

Ouch. Poor guy. He looked in good form too, and didn't seem to be doing anything "stupid" in the race.

And Cannondale seemed to have decent numbers. Just need a QS-esque DS and they'd be in business.

Please return your membership to the Boonen-fanclub with immediate effect. If you have any Boonen pate in your fridge, please bin it without eating it, as you're not good enough for it.
