Take guesswork out of it and spend a small amount of cash on a meter kit like this

    i am intrigued by this.

what would you do with it?

Measure what you blood glucose is going at various points - it's a really interesting exercise to do for a week. For non-diabetics (like me) it should stay within a range but the interaction between ingested carbs, glucose from the liver and the action of insulin is an interesting one. It would certainly help the OP understand what's happening to his blood glucose at and after his cake stop

a lot of bollocks in this thread. Not sure what OP will make of it, but he has a weird diet and odd expectations on what sugar intake should or shouldn't be and "Griepel build" .....

One things for sure, almost nobody in this thread - myself included - are professional experts.

    I guessed that :D

If i was to do this for a week, what point would I measure and what levels should it be at? What protocol would I follow?

You'd measure typical pre and post anything that you're doing where you'd anticipate your glucose to change. It's not clinical so there's no ridged protocol to follow.

When I did this (as part of my work in a diabetes care company under the guidance of a diabetes nurse specialist - before anybody questions the validity) I measured
    morning fasting glucose,
    post-breakfast,
    Mid-commute (hilly 15-miler),
    Post-commute (directly)
    30 mins after commute,
    Pre and post lunch
    Pre and post return commute
    Pre and post dinner

I didn't do all of these every day (it's pretty uncomfortable to stick your finger often - I have every sympathy for diabetics and parents of diabetic youngsters)

What it does in particular is illustrate how your liver pumps in glucose for the ride and, after the ride, the fast dip as insulin stores glycogen (presumably as per "magic 20-40 mins").
