Can't fathom why MadVlad has gone this way. For years his trollbots hackers and disinformation campaigns have sowed discord in the West, e.g. Brexsh!t and Trump as high points. He had his oligarchy pals bribing, funding, compromising gullible politicos, Spaffer for example, 'Lord' Hampton and Siberia for example. He had Poland and Hungary moving away from EU integration.
Now. Pretty unanimous Fxxx You across all parts of Europe, inc Orban and the like.

Strategy includes crackdowns on protests, detention of opponents, and potentially carrying out public executions.

tbh, they can do that - to a massive extent its more hassle than its worth.rick_chasey said:So the **rumour** is martial law, no men under 50 allowed to leave, and massive conscription in Russia from tomorrow
once you've sorted the biffers, malingerers, incompetents, pacifists, political opposers, criminals, people who you don't trust with anything more than a ladle you still have to equip, train, feed, house, transport, pay them and then somehow fill their gaps in a now failing economy.
and we all know the Russians don't have all the food, kit and fuel in the world.
Plus this schiz takes time.
and once those who don't want to be in the army are forced in they're more trouble than they are worth which is why we laugh in faces of those who say they should bring back National Service.
Then, once they are in, you have to rely on them to actually go and fight as opposed to just surrendering/changing sides and giving up valuable kit to your enemy.
Yeah, its a worrying change on the military footing but this isn't 1939..The camera down the willy isn't anything like as bad as it sounds.

So my theory:MattFalle said:tbf, if they're doing all that after just one week its smacks of desperation...
So the economic sanctions are baked in until Putin is out. And they are brutal.
So he has to win the war at the very least else he is certainly toast. So if it looks like it’s getting bogged down in stalemate, which it looks like it could, or at least get protected, he’ll want to commit more to win it.
If he has designs on the world beyond Ukraine - former Yugoslavia - then plainly the army needs more to be bigger.0 -
Agree on what MF said earlier about conscripts. They take an army backwards, not forwards, especially in a war scenario where the conscripts are being asked to fight for something that isn’t close to their hearts.
And if this is happening after just a week, it seems very likely that a feeling of panic is sweeping through the Kremlin. A week for a multi city offensive really isn’t a long time.0 -

It does, but those ratios are based on trained troops. This is fast becoming an urban war scenario which isn’t where relatively untrained conscripted troops will add much value. They’ll just get in the way of those troops that know what they’re doing and quite frankly the casualty rate will soar. And once those conscripts start going home in body bags in their droves, sentiment back in Russia will plummet.1 -
Nothing says motivated more than someone who is coerced into a task they have no interest in and is pretty grim. I wasn't being serious. I do think when considering the number of troops availability their motivation is a factor that needs to be thrown into the mix.MattFalle said:

Yes, motivation is a big factor. We’ve already heard reports that Russian soldiers have been dismayed that the population they had been told they were liberating actually don’t want them there. That will be super corrosive.0
-
I did wonder earlier if this 40 mile convoy of crap kit and seemingly barely trained troops from the north had been a bit of a feint while the proper troops moved in on the real strategic targets in the south. However, I suspect the reality is that there aren't really any tactics because Putin is pulling the strings and is just batshit.0
