Tricky one... what is this? :-)

Is whatever it is, reflecting in water? But what's that in the bottom left?
Close. The black stuff is (used) engine oil. The wedge shaped bit in bottom left is actually the walkway access.

This is part of the permanent exhibition at MONA here in Tassie. This waffle pattern space is solid concrete wall structure, and you walk in to to the reflection pool of oil, which is about waist high (although allegedly only a few cm deep in fact). There's a viewing platform above it all where I took this pic.

Ah this is like the permanent installation at the Saatchi, here in London. I might pop over at lunch and get a snap with my phone.

Probably same artist I assume by the look of that.

Just the MONA building itself is fabulous, worth a visit for that alone.

That's half of the attraction for me, with galleries and museums; they're amazing spaces in themselves.

Does the oil installation at the MONA smell as great as the one at the Saatchi? I.e wonderfully evocative of driving old sports cars?

It is very definitely authentic oil smell! That exhibit is off to one side in a corner of the building, and one of the few parts of the gallery that are actually above ground level, probably for ventilation reasons I expect.

One of the nice things about the gallery here is that entry is *free* for Tasmanian residents - just provide proof of residency here and in you go.

Thanks BB. I know nothing about photography and it was taken on my mobile but I think it was just such a wonderful scene that even I couldn't mess it up.

We were in Queenstown (touring round the South Island) earlier this year.

Some photos from my New Zealand trip.

A fur seal in Kaikoura, a view of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman from Lake Matheson and a southern bottle-nosed dolphin in Milford Sound

elbowh your pictures are amazing! Isn't Queenstown the most beautiful place? We're due to go to Milford sound next week but it's currently cut off due to severe flooding which has destroyed the road.

That’s a shame. The mirror lakes on the way are stunning. And the sound is beautiful. No need to do the overnight trip though.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

    Nice!
Only negative comment is that if the camera was below the horizon it wouldn't cut the line. But that's being picky. 😉

The mirror lakes were a bit poor on the day we went as it was windy = no mirror!

However, the trip there and back is amazing with so many places to stop and explore between Te Anau and Milford sound. We did stay over, but it is very expensive.

    Thanks.

Yeah, unfortunately we only had a couple of nights there, but it was cool. We did do the hop-on hop-off wine tour tasting tour and got up the cable car also to have a go on the luge. We also drove the Crown Range route from Wanaka to Queenstown, which was not as hairy as we were told.

Shame about Milford Sound. We went to Fox Glacier township specifically to walk the trail to the Glacier head and found that all the roads to get there were shut also. That was supposed to be my birthday activity. Plus everything was overcast. We went to Lake Mathesons instead and as we got to the viewing point to see Mt Cook and Mount Tasman the sky cleared and the wind dropped, so I was able to get the mirror lake shot above.

When I tilted the screen on my laptop, that ^ picture was a totally black foreground with the sunset and it looked really good.

We did the Queenstown to Wanaka road trip over the Crown Range yesterday. We drove back the long way following the river and made a couple of stops at the Bannockburn wineries. Truly stunning scenery and what a road! We were in a Tesla Model.X and what a car, but that's another story (apologies for hijacking the photography thread with my travel updates).

  • New here but enjoy photography. Few shots. I really enjoy night photography. Full manual mode to get the setting I want. No flash, just a few seconds shutter speed.Love the lights against the night time contrast I guess.

Made it to Milford Sound, my amateur camera phone photography can never do it justice but it's just the most beautiful place.
