Some, like Bauke Mollema (Trek Factory Racing) and Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal) could smile and make light of the conditions when speaking with reporters beneath the rostrum. “I feel good, the course is a nice one and I quite like this weather,” Wellens said cheerfully.

Meanwhile, there's a bunch crash in the women's London marathon - runner hits her head on the pavement.

    HELMETS!

Hell of a gap to be giving a break like that in a race that might be shortened.

With conditions like this, If Froome makes it to the end in the lead group, I'd maybe start thinking he could ride and win the Giro. Doesn't ever seem to do to well in these conditions.

He's won a couple of pretty rain drenched Romandies. But he says himself he's a fair weather cyclist and prefers the Vuelta. I don't imagine he'll ever start another Giro.

Both these things are what I mean. He doesn't do well in the real cold, I don't think we'll see him do a Giro, but I'd love to as it's my favourite race of the year.

In last 30 mins got Nibali at 32-1 and Gallopin at 80-1 on Betfair Exchange so still some value out there.

Voeckler should be a cross country skiier given how much upper body work there is.

    Another classic.

Attack - then take your jacket off.

Voeckler definitely has a place on Team Not My Man, the showboating little "twit".
