Whiskey In The Jar by Thin Lizzy which isn't really a cover I suppose rather than a reimagining of an old folk song. The Metallica version which is a cover of a cover was pretty good too. In a similar vein Friggin In The Riggin by the Sex Pistols was a great rock n roll version of an old rugby song.
A couple of other good ones that come to mind,
    Denis by Blondie.
    MONY MONY by Billy Idol.
Always On My Mind Willie Nelson.

Pharrrel and and Robin Thicke's version of Got To Give It Up was pretty good, even if they called it Blurred Lines. 😁

Indeed. I have to turn the radio off/over if a Prince song comes on.

For cover, seek out David Gilmour mashing Purple Rain into Comfortably Numb, RAH April 2016.

The Waterboys do an excellent live version of Purple Rain:

Genuinely seen better drunken karaoke. Is that what this is?
Come to think of it, not heard worse. I do hope you were joking.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Sonic Youth side project, recorded in a karaoke booth. Love it.

God there's a lot of old fart music here and I'm hardly young myself. Anything from this century?

From 10 years ago, which is my best effort, and it is obviously not edgy as its's Boards of Canada but I only discovered it last year.

From 17 years ago you've got Aphex Twin's 26 Mixes for Cash which has some absolute belters on it.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/26_Mixes_for_Cash

The vast majority are improvements on the originals, with the exception of the Heroes cover which I find quite irritating.

From last century you've got Norman Cook cover of Brim-full of Asha

Not the biggest fan but I prefer the DFA remix of Dare by the Gorillaz

There's rarely a soulwax remix I don't prefer to the original. The let it happen remix of Tame Impala is good fun, fan of their crocodile boots cover and obviously GTA fans, the Synrise cover.

Video recorded in a mall video karaoke booth I think, for $15 worth every cent.
  • That lily Allen cover of Kaiser chiefs is better than the original

Van Helden's remix of Spin Spin Sugar
  • My issue is that I'm old, so anything from 15 years ago counts as recent. I think I had two songs from 2020 in my Spotify most listeners to. I just won't have heard any really recent cover versions.

Does this count as a Radiohead/hollies cover? I like it anyway.

    I don't think a remix counts as a cover.

remixes don't count as a cover? Explain the difference.

Surely a remix, if the song is largely in tact, is just a different approach and arrangement of the same song?

A remix has as a starting point the tracks recorded by the artist. Sure, in the most extreme, almost all of it may be discarded, but it's the starting point. A cover version starts from scratch.

I dunno it fits any more though. Would you say Eminem did a cover of this? (2:25 onwards)

Out of interest when there's a remix of a dance record does that not count as a cover?

Not a cover, and nor is a remix.

they're just changing the backing track, arrangement, tempo etc.

The original artist is still at the heart of the performance.

A cover, is a cover, a different artist is doing their version of it.

    Remix of a cover version.

(I think the cover version is better than the original, and the remix better than both.)
