"Wild Horses" - The Sundays. Soooo much better than the 'Stones original.
It's just a hill. Get over it.0 -
St Swithen's Day by Dubstar, original by Billy Bragg0

"Punk existed because of the false assumption that the Ramones could be imitated."
But this is pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWmZP1KIKIY0 -
Bit controversial - I much prefer the Budgie version (saw them in 1981) but even if you like Metallica the original is a classic.bbrap said:Breadfan (Metallica) Original by Budgie
[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]1 -
Mind you reading through the thread I'm not sure I agree any are better than the original ! Possibly Nazareth's this Flight Tonight us as good as Joni Mitchell's and both very different.
But... I forget who but said otherwise it but Days by The Kinks is just a million times better than the cover by Kirsty Mccoll. I'm going to have to open another drink to get over that one.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -
Summer Breeze by the Isley Brothers, way better than the soft rock original0

I'm with you. I can't agree that many of these covers are better than the original, particularly the Bowie cover (my first reaction was an almost angry "oh, f#ck off" and Valerie. The Zutons original is almost perfect. I hated the winehouse / Robson version.DeVlaeminck said:Mind you reading through the thread I'm not sure I agree any are better than the original ! Metallica are great at butchering far too many of their covers, especially Killing Joke's "The Wait".
Anyway covers, like all music, are very subjective. I love a bit of noisy punk, but at the same time love the cool funk of these two versions of the same song.

Is one better than the other.
No, just different.

I know when this was first on here I opted for Disturb's version of Sound of Silence and I stick with it. Back then some argued against it and then flounced off not long after (doubt it was related).
I love the Simon and Garfunkel version and their harmonies are excellent as ever but for me the rawness of the Disturbed version just works with the lyrics.
These threads always bring out a few songs that I never realised were covers.0 -
All Along The Watchtower, cover by Jimi Hendrix.
Surprised that hadn't already been mentioned. Maybe that was this thread last time round.
Does that make this thread a cover version? Which one's better?0 -
It is mentioned. Bob liked the arrangement so much that he copied it for future performances.me-109 said:All Along The Watchtower, cover by Jimi Hendrix.

I can't stop watching it. It keeps on giving, from the rap, through the awkward dancing to the terrible singing.DeVlaeminck said:

A killer cover of Stairway to Heaven by Heart.
Led Zeppelin are in the audience, so no pressure.

I maintain that the Hermes House Band cover (/remix?) of Country Roads is far superior to the original dirge...

Police and Thieves - The Clash
Pressure Drop - The Clash
Johnny Was - Stiff Little Fingers
David Watts - The Jam
Eloise - The Damned1 -
Not exactly a cover but James Brown and Pavarotti.... It's a Man's Man's World
But the arrangement and collaboration I think is terrific.
