Can't be a surprise that a lot of people in the US have far right views.

We all knew this, didn't we?

    I mean, for years.
  • You think he couldn't sink any lower yet day after day he finds a way.

It's genuinely saddening to see the US being presided over by a racist who supports Nazis and white supremacists, whose ego is so fragile he would disavow the majority of Americans and American history to give voice to a minority of hate-mongers that he relies on to stay in power.

Of course, the surprise is that the president of the US said these things in an address to the nation

Interested to see if his stance will change once Bannon is gone. Is he really pulling the strings? For Trump to put out those ramblings would suggest not.

With the rather heavy benefit of hindsight, I'm beginning to think that I ought not to have been surprised.

I mean, I've said for years and years that large swathes of the US are essentially far right (to the point where it was a major factor in turning down a lucrative US job), and my view wasn't particularly controversial. That the US now has a leader to gives a formal platform to those views, in hindsight, isn't all surprising.

Sure, those guys with torches and flags are the thin end of the wedge, but I think we all would agree there are a significant number of people in the US who will sympathise more with them than more traditional political movements and/or parties.

It's been represented so often in media and film, I struggle to believe we're all really surprised. It's more we're surprised that they have a formal voice....

It will always amaze me at just how racist America is and yet large swathes seem so totally oblivious to it.

When you are superior to everyone else, what's to notice?

He'll still have the Gorkas and Miller to peddle the alt-right views. And not forgetting Sessions to a lesser extent.

The bizarre thing is that the alt right are anti jewish and just on CNN they played an interview with an alt right campaigner saying how could Trump give his daughter to a Jew
I do not think you can feel a about race like I do and watch that Kushner b********d walk around with that beautiful girl. t

I would be happy to speculate that alt-right = doesn't get enough.

I guess the question has to be asked now purely from a contemplating point of view is "who is the leader of the free world? Merkel?"

    It was tongue in cheek.

My point was, if you are a white supremacist, then you're hardly going to be open minded.

To some extent, there are a lot[\i] of Americans, so if you assume around the same percentage of Americans are racist as Brits are racist, you will end up with a large pot of racists. Combine this with the internet, and it's extremely easy to make a lot of noise.

Trump appears completely out of his depth dealing with this. In historical terms, I see him as more of a Mussolini figure than a [insert Godwin's law reference] figure. It would be comical if it was not real life.

"When I make a statement, I like to be correct. I want the facts.... Before I make a statement, I need the facts, so I don't want to rush into a statement."

This is beyond delusional. He does know we have memories?

Actually, that is a good point. And coming from the north-east I should have probably seen that.

You wouldn't believe how backward some folk are around here, despite living in an area where we have one of the lowest ethnic minorities in the country.

    He is f*cking incredible.

Would LOVE to get inside his brain and find out how he thinks. To see if he really knows what he is saying is bs to cover up insecurities, or if he really believes all of the bluster.

As far as I can see, Trump has over the last 3 days criticised the following on Twitter:

    Democrats
    Ken Frazier of Merck Pharma
    Merck Pharma
    The media
CEOs dropping out of the Manufacturing Council
    Amazon
    The media

    And praised the following:

    The police
    Himself
    Himself
    Luther Strange
    Himself
    Himself
    The White House
    Luther Strange
    Kim Jong Un

TBH, I doubt many people over his lifetime have told Donald he's talking BS.

He's the product of having lived life surrounded by yes men.

His strategy is to not only never to back down but to go on the offensive. As Rick implies this has probably always worked. To us it looks like a man who needs to stop digging but it might turn out that it works - afterall it has so far.

    Britain. It's not that great.

I like the way that people actually gloss over the social and institutional racism that is inbedded in Britain whilst tut-tutting at those across The Pond: if the last few years haven't shown how racist the population of Britain actually is I don't know what needs doing to show same said.
