No.MattFalle said:is there limit to how many votes they can have before somrone appoints someone?
The most ever was 133 votes. This is now the most since the civil war.1 -

No. There were 133 in 1855, but there was the little matter of a civil war not that long after...

It’s not just the Republican dysfunction.
It’s also a feature (or bug) of a two party system when the outcome is a very slender majority - see May’s Brexit problems.
Very little room for negotiation between parties, so a minority of headbangers get outsized power.0 -
Although a large majority hasn't stopped the Tories being utterly dysfunctional...rick_chasey said:It’s not just the Republican dysfunction.

If the minority is big enough….
Opposition are incentivised to make the only other party stew in their own sh!t and be dysfunctional which is not in the interest of the country.
More room for finding compromise and negotiation in a coalition model. (Though clearly not always, as we see in Belgium and Holland)0 -
In an ideal world that would lead to the sensible elements on both sides compromising for an agreeable situation rather than giving in to the nut jobs on their own team.rick_chasey said:It’s not just the Republican dysfunction.

If the Republicans come begging to the dems, the rules they put forward will have to change a lot. Going to be a while before that happens.
If it becomes a real option, that changes the dynamic for the proper nut jobs, because they want to investigate hunter biden and have chaos.0 -
tbh I admire the enthusiasm with which those speeches were given - on the 10th ballotkingstongraham said:It's so weird.

Just saw a clip, the Democrats are acting like gleeful kids, screaming "nooooooooooo" when they are asked if they want to adjourne.First.Aspect said:.
Right now, only the Republicans are on TV, and not in a good way. So the Democrats will sit tight for a while.rick_chasey said:Swing voters think they’re all as bad as each other and this doesn’t help.
I don't think anyone comes out of this well.
They should use their leverage and- tempt the non-maga republicans to back an anti-maga republican.0 -
The only reason you might hear about this happening is because the Republicans think that rumours of it will tempt the nutters back in.rick_chasey said:

There aren't the moderate Republicans there to break ranks in a two year election cycle.
Once they have a speaker through bipartisan agreement, what rules do they adopt? How are committee memberships decided?
It only happens if Republicans fail completely, even with a non-mccarthy candidate. Not any time soon.0 -
There's an optimum time to leave the Republican's in their own mess.rick_chasey said:

I'm not sure what that time is - but the last flights home on a Friday night may be relevant

They have successfully adjourned every day.
Anyway, they have started again and he's going to lose again.0 -

The fact he was prepared to denounce Trump. Democrats may actually be keen on him getting in as at least a moderate member? Maybe.
Just happy to let the Reps make a mess in the interim.0 -

The consensus seems to be that he'll say anything to get votes & money, so a denunciation of Trump counts for nothing.0 -

"A man with no principles and will say anything to get the votes and the money" did remind me of a recent Prime Minister...0 -
Just how much roubles, sorry dollars does he have to bung the MAGAnoids to cross the line?0

Will he be not elected for longer than Truss was in power?
And if so, will this be more or less economically damaging?0 -
The more the nutters switch the more the speaker is giving MAGA promises.
Democrats are foolish to give the MAGA lot more leverage.0
