I'd be interested to know how far the softshell material comes down the shins if you wouldn't mind reporting back

The soft shell goes from just above the hip to about 4" below my knees. I'm 5'9" with my shoes on. I ordered a medium, seems A1.

    Thanks!

What is the general concensus on the latest Rapha Winter jacket?

    https://www.rapha.cc/gb/en/shop/classic-winter-jacket/product/SJK08XX

Most reviews on there seem to be favourable, but some saying it is not waterproof :?

It's an awful lot of money and, for me, falls between two stools. Is it rain (hardshell) or cold (classic).

Thanks BTR, I have been kindly gifted a 30% code, but that still means it costs an enormous sum of cash, and I thought you had given it a less than favourable review - is it in your blog?
If so, I will check it out later.

  • I've not done this one. I was a big big fan of the old hardshell, which was good for 5 degrees and wet, really good. This is a cross between that and the old classic softshell. If it's not waterproof that's a fail IMO. That was the raison d'etre of the hardshell. Why do they mess with stuff that works?

Yes true enough, but at £189 it's still a colossal amount of money, think I would need it to be reduced first to consider it with an additional discount.
Might order one just to see what it is like fit wise for future reference - am ordering a couple of jerseys I think, so something will be going back anyway.

  • You'll get a good feel of whether it's warm enough for deep winter or not. Worth a speculative buy. The old one was good down to 5 degrees or so in the rain, possibly lower. i.e british winter...........

    Daniel,
I have the Rapha Winter Jacket. Its an awesome jacket, but I think I have worn mine about three times for road riding max. Its a warm jacket and it is waterproof. But I find that when it is raining enough to need the jacket its too warm to wear it. There are very few days where I have found that I needed it. Even cycling in Snowdon in Mid-Winter I prefer to have layers. I use mine more on the MTB when I'm not working quite as hard for the entire ride.

First world problems, but anyway, I find that the Rapha Winter Jacket, it has to be cold and wet all ride. I don't run particularly hot either, but once its on, you are stuck with wearing it all ride.

I still find even in the coldest and wettest of mornings I tend to go with the old pro-team jacket with a deep winter base layer (not Rapha) and a waterproof jacket I can pack, but the old jacket withstands a lot so I very rarely add the waterproof layer. For me this is a lot more comfortable for tempo rides than the Classic Winter Jacket.

No longer for sale, but here's a link to see what you could have won! :D

I was tempted by the Pro Team Softshell to replace my old pro team jacket. But for £200 its a lot to fork out on especially when my current jacket is pretty much perfect (apart from a tad tatty now).

I'm liking the dhb aeron hybrid, looks like what I'm missing. I wanted something for when its dry, cold wind but not cold enough for the pro team jacket. I've been using a Rapha Softshell Baselayer, but this is fine for winter racing, its not so good for longer rides as I tend to sweat an awful lot in it.

Thanks w00dster - that's quite a cost per ride then!

I don't run hot, but even then it sounds like it is a pretty niche jacket - if it's absolutely hammering down, I would be unlikely to go out anyway - voluntarily that is, and if it's an event I'd be working hard anyway.

Yep I have only heard good things about the no longer available jacket :-(

Does anyone know if I'd need a medium or large pair of dhb roubaix tights. 6ft tall, 30inch waste, 34inch legs. Thanks in advance.

    is that as in Rapha?
I would have thought medium - BUT they have free returns.

@BTR - any insider knowledge on when the Gore One material might be available in different colours?

It arrived today, and the fit is good, and I like the apparent quality of it - just debating whether to keep it period, or return it, and wait for more bright colours to be available.
I'm shortly selling a wonderful Mavic H20 jacket, and a Galibier rain jacket, so this could have a home alongside the less packable Castelli Pave as my two waterproof items.

Also just noticed the 365 is a superior jacket, in terms of elastic on the wrists, and adjustable collar - but that is now on offer anywhere.
Although another review says it is not as close a fit as the non 365 one that is in theory £10 cheaper!

Yes it's an excellent piece of kit.

Handles 10-5 degrees without a base layer, and 5 through to cold enough that it's ice on the roads with a base layer.

Only thing I'd say is that, if, like me, you've got for a pretty close fit - the fabric on the front doesn't have much stretch, so it's not so comfortable off the bike.

BTR - I can get the see.sense icon rear light for £43 ish from Halfords, I know you've tested it so do you reckon it'll fit onto a saddle or rack bag as opposed to the seat post? I've sent them a message as well.

    Cheers Stuart

You can see here: https://seesense.cc/products/see-sense-icon-rear-light picture of it mounted on a saddle bag. Has to be sideways up for the strap to work in that configuration but is possible.

Someone else done something creative here:

Bloody hell, I'd looked for pics but got distracted by the " leave us a message " and went straight to that.
Much appreciated and I've ordered one. It's spend over £50 and get a tenner off then I'll use my BC card. :D
