Brand Snobbery in Cycling??
Comments

This is a surprising thread. Bikes are very leveling. What ever you own it needs pedaling. I would love to one day have a pinerello or colnago. After years (25+) riding at club level on lesser bikes why not, and does that make me a snob?. Does that mean I know no better? No it just means I have what I want. Curently I have a fonderest gara tube 14 speed, a dawes giro, and a ribble evo pro with ultegra. The ribble is a fantastic bike especially for the money. But I would still love to have a pinerello one days . I doubt it would be much better if any than the ribble. But snobbery, or its just having what I would like.0

Aspirational snobiness. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Pinarello - for people who like their bikes to look like they've crashed into a brick wall.0

Not seen Felt mentioned yet?0

Felt is for those who think a gun-crazy Yank in a tinfoil hat can make a better bike than an Asian with an engineering degree. 'Murica.English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0

I'm deeply confused. I've just obtained a SuperSix hi-mod because it was a silly bargain frameset. Am I still a cannondale man or does this psychologically make me a Scott rider?0

Last 3 bikes all giant, next one will be giant, too much choice out there, easy or lazy way is just get a giant.
Peel of the graphics of your bike and you will see the original giant graphic underneath.0 -
I ll admit to being a brand snob. My justification:-
I used to own a pinarello - I kept it for 8 years - for much of that time there was no other bike I aspired to - I loved it .
I currently own a Kuota - Not quite sure where that puts me in the brand stakes - However I researched my purchase for a year - in the end the deal I got, my kuota cost me only around £300 more - than something equivalent from spesh\giant etc.
Injury has hampered the riding of my Kuota - but Ive had it six years now - I still think its one of the nicer bikes on the road.0 -
Out of curiosity, did Pinarello have the reputation of being a fred's bike prior to sponsoring Team Sky? I'm too young to remember. :P Cheers0

Not just caught this thread and it is great.
Absolutely nailed Scott for me - a bike I'd never have bought had it been even remotely close to RRP
Since my brother and I are the only people I know who own Volagis, I challenge grill to characterise us
Jamis? I have no clue where they would sit. I'd hardly heard of them before I bought the bike. Name snob?ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
Giant makes most company's bikes...
Pinarello id for posh sportive riders who don't know any better.
Ritte is for douchebags.
Canyon is for people that like to wait months before ever getting their bike,
Specialized is for people who need something to follow since Jim Jones drank the the rest of the punch.
Trek because 'Murica.
Scott is for those that scooped up a great frame at a third of retail.
Wilier is for people who like to claim warranty.
Colnago is for people who love Campag and need somewhere to put it.
Bianchi is for people who need a bike to match their celeste shoes and iPhone case.
I could go on...
English is for ............?0 -

Not so. However, it was you I was asking as you were the author of the list I quoted. Also, as an English owner you would appear to be (possibly uniquely) be well qualified to make this addition to said list.0 -

Indeed. I didn't think it would be fair to include a brand with only a couple hundred frames on the market though.
Besides, I haven't even seen it in the flesh, much less built lit up yet. Be doing that when I head back to Arizona in a couple weeks.English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0 -
 ^ All of which brings us rather neatly back to the title of this 'ere thread .
A guy I know is having a Craddock built, for reasons that I suspect mirror your motivation in buying an English.
Exclusivity being one of them and elitism being the other,,,(hey 1x1 does equal 2 afterall)
I'm dying to point out to him that he should name his new steed Fanny. How about Jonny for yours ? ....0 -
Errr, no. I'm not precious with my bikes and I certainly don't name them. Got myself on this list after his TT bikes won at NAHBS because I loved the look of it (originally I was going to have him build me a TT bike, but changed my mind when I realised it would be slower than my current one). If I cared about exclusivity and was elitist I'd have kept my Fascenario 0.6.English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0

Hey it was only tongue-in-cheek. Did you read it as follows ? > "After all !, 1x1 does =2 ! " :?0
-
I was hoping it was tongue in cheek, after all the vast majority of this thread is tongue in cheek. Some people may take these things seriously though, I worry about them.
I read it as 1x1=2 which is incorrect. 1+1=2 whereas 1x1=1 in most generally accepted forms of mathematics.

So,,,,,,,,,,,,, five of each then ? :?0

"There are 10 types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't" as someone has written in their sig.
I was taught that it was gramatically incorrect (or maybe just undesirable) to use numerals in a sentance rather than spelling the word.
"There are two types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't".
The ambiguity the joke relies on does tend to lose something in that case though!0 -
