Do riders that just want to dip their toe in so to speak always end up going for the likes of Giant but "proper" riders go for Cannondale for example.

Whatever hobbie i've ever been in there's always an element of this that goes on
Does it exist in road cycling?

    Giant makes most company's bikes...
Pinarello id for posh sportive riders who don't know any better.
    Ritte is for douchebags.
Canyon is for people that like to wait months before ever getting their bike,
Specialized is for people who need something to follow since Jim Jones drank the the rest of the punch.
    Trek because 'Murica.
Scott is for those that scooped up a great frame at a third of retail.
Wilier is for people who like to claim warranty.
Colnago is for people who love Campag and need somewhere to put it.
Bianchi is for people who need a bike to match their celeste shoes and iPhone case.
    I could go on...

I'd agree with Grill for the most part - and especially with Pinarello's - whenever I see someone on one (and especially if they are also wearing Team Sky kit but not actually on the team), I immediately have the thought "All the gear and no idea".. These people tend to have no technique, bad fit and a round belly :)

When I bought my bike, I deliberately didn't buy a Giant (It made it to my final 2 though) only as round where I live, we have an excellent independent Giant dealer (bear with me - I know that sounds insane..) Purely as it meant I would be different - the consequence of having an excellent Giant dealer is that nearly everyone round there rides a Giant.. Or one of their really expensive custom builds :)

The cycling fraternity (and I grudgingly suppose sorority) is blissfully free of snobbery, elitism or any form of prejudice.

It is a lovely place and I am proud to be a part of it. All the chaps (and one might accept that there are one or two gals) are in it only for the joy of riding.

I suppose that if pushed for a view, one might accept that a chap with a bicycle like mine aspires to my level of expertise and dedication. I wish him well in that quest, although he needs to accept that he will never quite make it.

Then there are those with bicycles slightly or significantly more expensive (I do not say better) than mine. These are delusional fools and narcissists of the lowest order. They are cheque-book experts and worse. I spit on them and would happily see them burn like pigs in Hell.

On the other hand, those with bicycles slightly or significantly worse (by which I mean cheaper) than mine are ignoramuses and fools. They clearly do not know value when they see it and are scrimping in the wrong place.

So to put it briefly, there is no snobbery or elitism, but do watch out for the pond slime I mention above. And if you have to ask the value of my bicycle, you can assume that you are a member of one or the other group.

The chief benefit of cycling is the mutual respect and deference it encourages. Should you feel an inkling of dissent on my views, do bear in mind that I am right and you may not yet have earned the right to an opinion.

    I hope I have helped.

i rarely even notice what colour other people's bikes are let alone which brand/model!

snobbery is an attribute of a snob, not a manufactured object, there are snobs in all walks of life, some are funny, some are obnoxious, all are sad

    You're so right  :D

Mine was only half price   but it was the entire bike with top end components too :D
  • I think you'll encounter more "snobbery" on here than you will back in the real world. I've found the roads to be full of friendly, sociable types who just have a great enthusiasm for their sport/hobby tbh.

Someone made mention earlier that people are slightly more judgemental of clothing than bikes, he may just have a point! Although I'd suggest it's more of a issue online .... Read anything "Rapha" related :)
Still thinking of something clever to say!
  • It exists almost entirely on forums as opposed to the real world...and as for the clothing...anti Rapha inverse snobs outnumber the Rapha snobs 10,000 to 1*.

*yet to meet or read a post from an actual, bona fide Rapha snob that doesn't exist in a forum users mind but I'm sure they exist

    Ritte is for douchebags.

I get the rest, but why is Ritte for douchebags?

No, I don't own one, amongst others I ride a Cervelo (for people who think they understand the intricacies of bike design but don't, or those having a mid life crisis but can't afford a Pinarello)

Being a newcomer to the scene i find it interesting that wearing pro team kits is frowned upon...why?
Absolutely any other sport i can think of its totally acceptable to wear your teams kit.
Why in cycling would you be laughed at if you have Team Sky kit on??

I don't buy the "you haven't earned it".......if i wear my Liverpool or England footy shirts i couldn't be further from "earning" those shirts if i tried

They were founded by SoCal bros on the premise of over-charging for open mould frames with non-existent heritage and pretty paint.

BMC - for people who don't care that all their bikes look the same.

  • There used to be just one Cannondale dealer in Ireland, so they were pretty rare round the country. Said dealer was/is one of the best shops around, which definitely helped. Being that they were light, fitted well and tended to be green, I was all over that.

I would be more inclined to dislike individual bikes than whole brands. Most have at least one bike that's decent, or that you could see yourself on.

Thanks, I now understand (though I had to google SoCal bros  )

Only in the UK - on the continent pro team kit seems to be really common, no-one seems to care. I think we're just too cool 8)

Indeed. I didn't think it would be fair to include a brand with only a couple hundred frames on the market though. ;)
