Brand Snobbery in Cycling??

Italian manufacturers used to make some of the nicest bikes in the World when they were constructed from steel tubes. Now they have gone over to carbon, I struggle to even think of one that isn't minging.
There are still some Italian framebuilders who are hand building lovely carbon frames, plus titanium and steel too. You just have to look past the obvious Italian names0 -

Waaaat..? you actually saying a C59 is minging?
What a crass remark.
I'm happy to ride what I've got, but can still appreciate what is out there to be got if you have the money.0 -
English, for folks that don't want the hassle of actually having a bike, and that like waiting in queues...0

Oh yes! Let's make a carbon frame but we'll make it look like it's been constructed with lugs and then we can charge the punters an absolute fortune coz they'll think it's a classic. Minging.0 -

They are made using lugs.

Even worse, faux nostalgia. Double minging.0 -
Aesthetically they are a bit marmite. But I think Colnago know how to make a good bike and the C59 was a better ride than a lot of the big brands equivalently or higher priced monocoque offerings.0

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

No it's gorgeous. But what the other two said ;-)MTB: Self-built Santa Cruz Highball Alloy 10 Spd Deore.
Winter: Emmelle 1980's Reynolds Steel retro
Summer: Specialized Secteur Elite w. upgrades.
Commuter: Fausto Coppi San Remo0 -
Yes, it is horrendous, and to free you of your pain please give it to me.0 -
That's one of those bikes that doesn't actually look that good at all (not terrible) but it has a De Rosa logo on it so people automatically lose the ability to see the bike's design for what it is.0 -
Is my bike really that bad?0

What a load of toss.
It's a bike for goodness sake.
Are you a bike designer then? Show us some of your work...........0 -

Storck owners are constantly defending 'design' choices (i.e. Marcus' strange geometry theory).English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0 -
That bike epitomises everything that's wrong with certain bike designs at the moment, especially from Italy IMO. It looks like it's made from wrought iron and painted with Hammerite.0 -
You know when you see a young lad who really loves his car and clearly spends a lot of both time and money on it, slaps fancy wheels and plastic spoilers and what nots all over it...
That's what a lot of modern my little pony bikes make me think of.
Sometimes quality is understated. Bling just looks silly. There are some very nice modern bikes about but some bikes which are clearly good quality just look like they're trying too hard.0 -
Oh Dear! I have a Giant Defy (carbon) as a summer bike and a Boardman CX Team with road tyres and mudguards as a winter bike. How long do I have to stay in the leper colony before I am allowed out to buy a Trek Domane.I don't do Cold, Wet, Uphill or into the wind!!0

De Rosa here too, with a Pinnacle Arkose doubling up as a winter bike and for going on trails with the kids. Pinnacle's not been given the treatment yet
This is one hilarious thread!0 -
Currently ride a retro Bianchi which will be labelled as the winter bike with a new BMC SLR02 joining it as my new best bike soon.
Have steered clear of Merida,Specialised,Cannondale and cervelo as that seems to be what everyone rides in these parts.
So i guess I am showing a little snobbery there too0 -
you'll enjoy your BMC. they are really great bikes.0

OT but that reminds me of when I first started work. Me and my housemate both had Ford Escorts. His instinct was to add all kinds of extraneous tat, lights, stereo etc while neglecting it mechanically. Mine stayed true to the factory spec and I kept the paintwork pristine, and the engine running sweetly, mainly by taking it to bits and putting it back together again. How I miss the mechanical simplicity / lack of anything electrical...0 -
