Brand Snobbery in Cycling??

I get a fair bit of stick at time for owning a De Rosa so would be intriguied to know Grill's perspective. Also what bike do you ride Grill?
Dude, my signature is in every post...
De Rosa are for those who crave the approval of Rapha-ites, but still want to maintain the heir of a connoisseur when riding with their club mates.
Genesis are for those that desperately want to get on the 'steel is real' train but on a budget. Those that think the Zero is a selling out will soon jump ship for Rourke or Ritchey.
Focus are for those who don't mind riding a bike devoid of character but wouldn't be seen dead on a Cube.English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0 -

lol Like it! Not sure I crave Rapha, but agree with the latter comment!0 -
Kinesis is for the budget conscious that came from an MTB background and don't mind questionable welds.0

Wow, wasn't expecting a 5 page response.
Clearly there is snobbery then lol0 -

There's snobbery in every aspect of life. If anything, the last 5 pages should attest to how good natured most cyclists are when it comes to a bit of ribbing.English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0 -
Some Cinelli bashing please..0

I'm also pretend-insulted by your assessment of Boardmans (I don't love that one as much) and will take your comments about Moda as applying equally to my Forme, which is a sister brand I think and indeed not quite as British as it first appears.0 -
I am on an Orbea which I don't think has been mentioned as yet.
I would like your pearls of wisdom on said bike Grill but I fear you will probably tell me I am supporting ETA by buying one!0 -
cinelli for people that want a colnago but cant afford it and think that their "heritage" brand has cache despite not having had a competitive bike in the pro ranks for 30 + years
I own 2 cinellis0 -
Can't wait for the Raleigh critique . . . . . . . . .0

I wonder where they ( and Bianchi ) are made ? Taiwan maybe ?
Not that I'm complaining about Taiwan frames, I just take Italian-ness with a marketing pinch of salt."The Prince of Wales is now the King of France" - Calton Kirby0 -
Ridley is for people that think an hour of running around holding a bike in a muddy field actually constitutes cycling. Rumour has it that the frames are actually grown in a bog and cultivated in the spring.

Wow, 6 pages in and I still don't know if I did the right thing buying a Giant Defy 3 road bike.
Oh well, suppose it's too late now so I'll just continue as I am riding road in my chunky MTB shoes, baggy Enduras and Royal DH tops looking like a right nobber. But you know what if any snobs don't like it they can kiss my oval ringand this was supposed to be my 'cheaper' hobby
Orange Alpine for fun, Spesh hard rock for off road commute and maybe a road bike too soon.0 -

You should have got a Defy 2 obviously.0 -
Giant makes most company's bikes...
Pinarello id for posh sportive riders who don't know any better.
Ritte is for douchebags.
Canyon is for people that like to wait months before ever getting their bike,
Specialized is for people who need something to follow since Jim Jones drank the the rest of the punch.
Trek because 'Murica.
Scott is for those that scooped up a great frame at a third of retail.
Wilier is for people who like to claim warranty.
Colnago is for people who love Campag and need somewhere to put it.
Bianchi is for people who need a bike to match their celeste shoes and iPhone case.
I could go on...
I just took my Bianchi on a four day, 400 mile event and I've been reminded of how fantastically engineered the frame is0 -
Genesis?
I was once passed by a trio of riders on identical Genesis bikes, and I thought, there goes Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks.0 -

Cinelli - Exclusively for hipsters getting their second bike (first is a beater and third will be a Leader). No one buys a Cinelli with gears.
Raleigh - For the nostalgic that desperately want a return to greatness. When you mention their bike they'll immediately launch into an anecdote about their first Chopper or winning their first race on a Flyer.
Orbea - for those that want a cheap bike ridden by pros and prefer to do their warranty correspondence between the hours of 17:00 and 23:00.English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0 -

Nailed it.
And I'm glad you've picked out my next bike for me...0 -
As a recent purchaser of a Condor, I'd really like to know who I am. Grill???0

I'm a Rapha clad Cat 4 wobbler, on my 4k c60... looking to smash it to bits.
38" waistline clad in Italian threads, when I'm not on the bike.

It's kind of the opposite to petrolhead snobbery. With petrolheads you actually get reverse snobbery - one where those with a Mk 1 Ford Fiesta will argue that it's 95% of what a Porsche Carrera is, and anyone with a nice car is to be ridiculed (of course, I'm exaggerating slightly!).
I've found with cycling there is some snobbery in that certain sources of kit/equipment are frowned upon.
I was out clad in my £20 Didoo bib tights yesterday, bought off eBay. Honestly, it was the most comfortable ride I've ever had. Sure, I looked like a fat bloke in a onesie due to the cut not being as streamlined as £200 bib tights and people may have pointed and laughed, but I got home with a huge grin on my face and the most incredible endorphins rush. And that's what it's all about for me.0 -

Funnily enough, I got called a hipster by a coach at Herne Hill Velodrome.
My track bike is a Cinelli Mash
However, I do own a geared Cinelli Experience. Exception rather than the rule I suspect!0 -
Just joined forum - this is the best cycling thread I have ever read!0

Italian manufacturers used to make some of the nicest bikes in the World when they were constructed from steel tubes. Now they have gone over to carbon, I struggle to even think of one that isn't minging.0
