Sorry I know this should probably be in amateur race and sorry again if it has been covered before but thought it would get more hits here.
First I had heard of this was from here http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest-news/british-cyclist-dan-stevens-banned-for-failing-to-provide-anti-doping-sample-192254 Searched his name on twitter and he just seems to retweet every doping article going. Anyone know what he was taking/if he has opened up much about it?

His ban expires on Nov 1st 2015?
AFAIK the incident happened some time back, was given a 2 year ban which has been reduced to 21 months for providing information, he appealed for a larger reduction and it's only recently been fully settled to remain as 21 months0 -
I find it amusing that a rider who would never even be in race that would get mentioned on this forum gets a whole thread to himself for doping.
It obviously means Team Sky are doping.0 -
Not a shock though that there are some amateurs with a bit of cash spending it on dope though?0

I raced a TT earlier this year, I was off very early (on a road bike with skis and some borrowed "aero wheels") once I had finished I hung about and watched the rest of the people coming and going. I noticed the bikes people were riding, I couldn't believe it, better stuff than some pro teams use. I also raced a guy in a 4th cat only race on a venge, with 808's and full Dura ace.
The point of that is, it's no surprise amateurs are doping. Got to justify the over kill with equipment.0 -
Plus some people are just uber competitive a-holes.0

tbf his career has REALLY gone downhill since he left Downton Abbey0 -

That's not what he said though is it - if there's lots of people competing in lower cats still willing to spend up to five figures on a bike (which there's a pretty high chance of damaging in a 4ths only race by all accounts) then you only need some of them to be unscrupulous.
Doping follows money and you only need to go to popular cycling spots on a weekend to see that there's a lot of money in amateur cycling. Obviously that's not to say anyone with an expensive bike is buying EPO off the internet because that would be a completely stupid thing to say, but if you've got a big pool of people competing/showing off with a lot of money there's bound to be some who take it too far. Especially since anecdotally it's not that expensive.0 -
I guess those who can afford it are more likely to dope than those who can't. Beyond that, I don't get the connection.0

And there's a lot of people who can afford it in amateur cycling.
Maybe he was implying that dura ace means doping, I'm just assuming that he wasn't0 -

You missed the point 100%.
I made the connection that if someone has the money to spend five five figures, to race a 4th cat crit every other week, then they might have the money to spend on that something extra.0 -

Without a shadow of doubt. I can't race at the moment because I'm on cortisone and a steroid for eczema. I wouldn't cheat, but there are those that do I'm sure.0 -
He's one of many from the south east being targeted by UKADA. There seems to be a small doping ring there that is slowly being taken down. He's evidently given information to Circ but is still trying to find out who gave UKADA his name.0

I wouldn't know how expensive the top end of the banned list is but there are cheap PEDs and things you can get for free if you tell your doctor the right thing. We don't even know which this story relates to. We can all afford to cheat if we want to.0 -

Clearly humour escapes you, that's what the line about justifying the expense was about.
Everyone else on the forum got what my post was about it seems only you struggled with it.0 -

Be interesting to know what info he gave them or if he had just sent them on a wild goose chase0 -

You've been to one TT and come on here to imply people are cheating, based on the cost of their equipment. That will tend to attract argument.0

He needs to get a refund on anything he was taking as he was still sh1t.
It seems that there is a growing number of racing cyclists who think they are being beaten by people on gear so are going out and getting it themselves as they think they ned it to be competitive. UKADA seem to be quite well informed on what is going on and are picking them off. If only UKADA were catching the guys at pro tour level as quickly but I guess this gets their stats up without upsetting any sponsors.0 -

This is odd for me, I never had a single discussion about this in my racing years in the UK. Hangovers, excepted."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

It's certainly a modern phenomenon. Doping products are far easier to obtain these days and the risk vs reward ratio is stacked too far on the side of reward.
Just ask yourself. What deterrent is there to not dope?
Bear in mind that Tearnon-Locke will walk straight into a decent team after his ban is up and has also kept his Sky salary (c £400k p.a. plus bonuses).0
