I would disagree that Froome was doing those Vuelta's only as training. He came fourth in 2012 and looked like he was trying to win last year.

I'm not sure the two are mutually exclusive - Sky may have wanted him to do it for training too.

My point was that Contador probably knew that Astana was likely to not be invited to the tour before Feb 2008. The season before Astana was asked to leave the tour and then threatened with suspension.

That's how i remember it too BB, It was a typical cycling secret - everyone knew

The Riis announcement is supposed to be made on Feb 25th and it is being reported that he is looking at buying Tinkoff back.

The reports appear to have been unfounded. Looks like Riis is not buying Tinkoff back but starting a whole new team:

Didn't Contador retire at the same time as FF?

I just think the thread title suffers from delusions of grandeur . It should say, "Alberto Contador loves the Great Tits".

This would also give the thread ornithological longevity.

Contador may be the greatest, but he was only second choice for Trek. They wanted Nibs but couldn't get him...

    Italian sponsors, innit. Click-bait headline.

He can. If a few other people fall off. Which in fairness, is not that unlikely; and seemingly all the other bigs are prioritising the Giro means he's in with a podium shout.

Hayman thought the same about Paris-Roubaix. Bertie's won the other two GTs (and done so since his ban), so it makes sense to keep knowing at this particular door.

Right. So he can win it if a selection of the oppo fall off.

It's done Nibali's career no harm...

Most probably - but I can't fault him for still aiming high. Once he stops believing he can win the biggest race, he may as well retire.

I wish he would try for the Giro or Vuelta as I don't think he can win another Tdf no matter who or how many fall off*.

    *and before anyone says '197'...
