Tinkoff-Saxo's doctor says that Basso has a '98 to 99 per cent chance' of a full recovery.
@friebos 46m46 minutes ago
Basso has just left the Tinkoff-Saxo hotel in a car driven by his old friend & agent Giovanni Lombardi.

Basso initially wanted to carry on racing. Tinkoff doc Piet de Moor: 'You know what bike racers are like.'Contador is the Greatest0 -
He's probably the only rider who's glad he crashed last week. Who knows how long it might have taken to spot it, were it not for the post-crash scan? Bloody hell.
All the best to him. It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.0 -
So basically, he's this generation's Leif Hoste.
Sepp isn't quite that specialist.
And get well soon Ivan Basso.0 -
PR day.0 -
Best wishes to Ivan Basso, as other have said let's hope it's been caught early.0

Meanwhile, if you believe the doperati, scores of cyclists are transfusing blood; in total secrecy.

They have to say that so they can say "told you so" when a rider performs well post rest day.
Talking of which, I expect Joel will be along in a bit....0 -
of all cancers to get, testicular cancer is the one you want. It is very responsive to chemo and the cure rate is very high, although the chemo sucks and his pro career is over as the regimen will most likely involve bleomycin (which destroys lung function)/ etopicide and cisplatin

My wife had the late stage germ cell ovarian cancer diagnosed 4yrs ago (essentially the same as most testicular cancer) which is exceptionally rare in women, as opposed to the much more common and deadly form of ovarian cancer and went through BEP, which was unsucessful, and had to undergo more aggressive chemo and stem cell transplant but we are here in the alps just now, 4 yrs on , hill walking and MTB.
Dig in Ivan....0 -

Doesn't the last 20 years or so suggest that quite a few will be, albeit in smaller amounts since the introduction of the BP?0 -

Not really, no. 2015 isn't 1995.
Horrible news about Basso, that crash could have done him the world of good in a strange way. Hope he recovers quickly.
Edit: Just had a look in the clinic to see how rabid they were getting about Froome, and there's a 'testicular cancer and doping' thread already up. Something seriously wrong with those people.0 -
Guess I must have imagined all those scandals since '95 then!
Awful for Basso - feel bad for chuckling at him struggling in the TTT at one point.0 -

Sick really rather than rabid. My thoughts are with Ivan.0 -
To take your mind off the sad news - go to this on a big monitor - no tiny smartphone - and enjoy

Wow, some seriously fantastic photo's there. Thanks for the link0 -

There are different types of testicular cancer. The most common in men past their 20s such as Basso is much less aggressive and normally requires nothing more than surgery if caught early. Hopefully that's the case.
How he can deal with appearing in front of the press 2 hours after that diagnosis is anyone's guess, chapeau for that alone...0 -

You think it's likely that a large number of riders are hooked up to drips, and injecting a little EPO over the next few days to mask the effect, with nobody noticing? Roughly how many people in total do you imagine are involved? 100?...a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0 -
To get the news is one thing but then to have to appear in front if the world's press only 2 hours later is horrible.
Hope he makes a full recovery.0 -

Well the CIRC said 80% didn't it?0 -

+1 to this - takes a certain kind of courage. Hopefully the crash is a blessing in disguise and it's been caught nice and early as a result - I hope he makes a full recovery.0 -

I'm assuming quite a few will be, yes. Handfuls maybe? Is this a controversial position? - riders have been blood doping for quite some time and I don't see why they would all have stopped.0 -

You piped-up when I pondered the logistical challenges of field-infusing much of the peloton. It seemed you were suggesting that it must be happening. I mean why would they stop. But in the space of a few minutes, you're now proposing it's a mere handful of riders.

Just watched the Dowsett interview after the stage, he doesn't sound happy does he, doesn't seem to have had good form for a while now and when he's struggling on a TTT he must be concerned.
Anyway, with the mountains coming up apart from the climbs are there any descents where a GC man might try and launch an ambush? Looking at the Pyrenees the Tourmalet descent looks well placed but I've never ridden it - looks steep on the profile. In the Alps the Col de la Morte descent is tricky but followed by a long drag up the valley so that probably rules it out, the Glandon to St Etienne de Cuines could be interesting though and if it was wet I reckon action on the descent would be pretty much guaranteed. Any others?
Just last month I rode in the Pyrenees for a week, did the col du Aspin and the col du tourmalet the way the pros will and descending the tourmalet was worth the pain climbing it! 17km averages doesn't drop below 8% after the first few Km's maxing out at 13% around the ski sections! The descent is brilliant few long straights after the first few corners!0 -
While it's good fun unmasking clinician le professeur, I'm more interested in hearing from our Alberto correspondent. How is it possible that we've discussed TJ more than AC?...a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0

Wow - great story! Go back and check my original post: I said "quite a few will be', which is in line with my last post (handfuls). Do you think no-one's doing it now?0 -

+1.
Unless you are talking about volume of substance per rider.
To my mind there has been a decline, the word massive would not form part of the sentence.
Rest day, schmest day!!! Pah.0 -
