I think out of the gc guys Quintana will be the happiest. Hardly lost any time at all really.

    You don't think Nibali?

Strong by Nibali despite the odd radio bump. Good that all the GC riders are close (apart from Purito).

So Nibali takes a slight lead out of the 'big four.' Nothing significant in the scheme of things though. Thankfully.

Pinot again shows how much he has improved his TT.

So, a handful of seconds between the main protagonists (Bardet excluded) is the sum total of this year's ITT kms.
An underwhelming start to this Tour.
Quintana is in the pound seats, as a result, I reckon.

Well obviously he will be happy putting time into his rivals. But Quintana was always going to be the weakest in the tt so I think he will be happier still being so close to his rivals with his weakest event out the way.

Pinot beating all 4 of them could be the most significant surprise for the overall - real contender for the win now? He'll lose time in the TTT, but is clearly in good shape

    Nibali 15'39" +00'43" 22nd place
    Froome 15'46" +00'50 39th place
    Contador 15'54" +00'58" 46th place

I agree with this. There was a risk of him being a lot further back, I thought.

Over 30 secs down for Dowsett. Bad unless we blame the heat.
Sounds like Dowsett was trying to match Dennis on the first half of the course but the conditions were worse so he ended up digging himself into a hole and paying for it in the second half.

No. Going out early was clearly a big advantage. Nibali has this in the bag already.

    En route home.

    Main points from roadside:

Was a tougher test for the audience to sit through the whole 3.5hrs then for the riders. Was very hot - especially early on when there was no breeze - probably explains the finish list too. I'm ok in the heat and it was hard work at times for me.

Contador looked unusually uncomfortable roadside. Crazy grimace I haven't seen before (roadside).

Neither did Froome - Quintana looked ok and so did Nibs.

Rohan was noticeably faster when he came past.

Very fun relaxed vibe. Not too intense about the sport but enjoying it nonetheless. Some good fun balcony water fights kicked off which everyone enjoyed.

    Did it well.

With the TTT coming so late and having the potential for disaster, given the nature of the finish, I thought it interesting to look at how the big 4's teams fared today. A lot of water to pass under the bridge before then but is is it a possible pointer to who will come out on top?

Good one Blazing. G put in a big ride and am surprised that Konig came in firing. Quintana got lucky by going early.

    Quintana: 70km in 5 TTs
    Contador: 83km in 4 TTs
    Pinot: 115km in 8 TTs

Nice numbers. Froome has come into this race rested as the pea princess. He has zero excuse for not firing on 100% cyclinders all race. Contador has almost 2x the amount of km and race days. Contador will only get better also. Even Quintana (who people think has been incognito despite winning the tough T-A stage race) has more race days and km then Mr Chris 'I don't have to race much' Froome.

I think, win or lose, Froome may quietly be thinking of doing the Vuelta as well after this.

Simon Yates beat Froome by 4s and Froome was 45s slower than Tony Martin. Quite a change from 2013 TT Froome. Wonder if his TT has to suffer to compete with these climbers.

No change for Alberto's GT cojones. Still uncomfortable in his skinsuit.
