Labour should say thanks to the Tories for putting in the work that led up to this increase. There is always a lag between improving economic conditions and the data feeding through into the forecasts.

Look harder. I've already commented on the problems in the proposed housing targets.
But the stupidest thing they've done so far is cancel a load of infrastructure projects instead of reversing Hunt's unfunded employee NIC cut.

15% backdated over 3 years is hardly earth shattering, especially when including 2022, but don't let that get in the way of the headlines.

Possibly not for you, as your train fares will likely have to go up to cover the cost. And given that Labour did not negotiate any changes to working practices etc with the rail unions, the service won't get any better. Given your perma-moaning about trains I'm surprised you're happy with this.

A below inflation rise, most of which is backdated seems like a pretty good deal. As with almost all skilled jobs there are vacancies so pay goes up. That's just a basic fact of being an employer. Of course if the previous government hadn't taken pay negotiations out of the operators' hands it wouldn't even be a public pay dispute.

15% for the last three years is a fair bit less than I got without having to negotiate. As they haven't had a pay rise since 2019, it doesn't seem crazy.

Well done you, maybe you were underpaid before but £70k a year for driving a train seems a bit on the high side to me. Some people are just greedy and the unions will be back for more, as they now know that striking pays. Not just the rail unions either.

And not just other unions trying their luck: the same ones will likely be back for more now they have seen Labour's weakness and willingness to please:
