Not sure that's right. Boris is direct line manager in one of the three most serious government positions may behind the PM. If he can't keep track then not looking good for becoming PM!
BTW those meetings are arranged privately and took place on her holiday. If you are a line manager do you know who your ppl speak to on holiday? I know it's not that simple but if you take an ambitious over achiever (I think Pritti Patel has been a media hound when in the back benches with a keen eye of joining a ministerial position, secretary of state for international developments is a step up there) then you can end up with a chancer doing this sort of thing. If it works out and doesn't become public knowledge and your line manager is competent / not self centered you do well. If not your misdeeds become public knowledge and your political career stutters.
Having said that I don't like the idea of a lobbyist getting in on those meetings. A bit of a bad decision on her part I think. Although would she have got in to see the Israeli pm without a pro Israeli lobbyist there?0 -
They get pretty strictly briefed on who they can meet in a private capacity.
She's getting a big fat smackdown, and she's having to grovel and grovel and grovel because the Tories can't afford to lose a by-election.0 -
It's really just a move to back bench type of offence.0

Just skimmed a news article about it. Am I right in thinking he told parliament that she was over there teaching journalism which meant Iranians charged her with spreading propaganda.
So the issue is he reported to parliament or that sensitive information from parliament was made public?
I'm sorry but if the foreign secretary is reporting on matters of a sensitive nature to parliament, why was it not done in a secure way? I'm assuming you don't have the opinion that parliament should be kept in the dark on foreign affairs / diplomatic matters?
So is the issue Boris said it or that the season wasn't carried out in private? If the latter surely it's more an issue with the speaker's department since they deal with what goes on in parliament I thought.?0 -

Quite simply, any FS should nt be saying this sort of inaccurate cr@p, in secrecy or not...she was there on hols with her daughter, her day job back in the UK is irrelevant, it comes down to other threads/posts, when in power you ve exactly that...power, if E.Thornbury had something similar, the Iranians would nt even know who the heck she was....
whatever he says now, is too little too late.
BJ has fcuked over this poor womans life and is unfit for any form of public office, if May had any authority, he d be sacked in an instant but as we all know, she is a lame duck PM.0 -

No. I work in the public sector and the lines are very clearly drawn - eg we are told pretty clearly to be careful not to express any opinion on private social media that could be construed as organisational policy. Nobody can fail to understand when they are at work and representing the organisation (during which time you are probably careful to ensure that you are following policy correctly) and when they are at home they are not. Your line manager doesn't need to know who their staff speak to on holiday because they are on holiday and therefore not at work and therefore not doing work things. It's really very, very simple.
Patel is either a special kind of stupid or she knowingly broke the rules. Given her track record I presume the latter.Faster than a tent.......0 -

In his defence could I say that Boris has never been fit for public office, we have not learnt anything new about him that we did not already know therefore this is no reason to consider sacking him0 -
Just had time to read the story properly. In defence of my earlier comment I tend not to listen to anything BJ says or does anymore. He's only fit for comedy on have I got news for you. I personally think he should stick to his strengths and go back to TV. I personally don't think comics make good MPs. Even Giles Brandreth wasn't much cop.

Many argue that debt does not matter but yesterday there were some interesting stats. Since 2009 we have spent over £200bn on interest. And if inflation stays 1% higher until 2021 then it will cost us £26bn. In other words if our predecessors had not borrowed so much in the past we would not be in ten years into austerity measures.0

Since this thread has morphed into a bit of a slagging the Tories off thread I will join in.
Anyone got an opinion of Priti Patel?
Last thing I read was she's coming home early from Africa to face May again. Also she's facing censure over another matter. Apparently she's signed off on giving money to the Israelis army (IDF as in Israeli Defence Force).
Seems it's under the guise of being for aid in the Golan Heights. Can't the Israelis afford to look after their own in the areas they control? I understand money for Palestinian controlled areas but Israeli areas.
BTW am I being antisemitic making these comments?
She has to go and quickly. She's tainted politically.0 -

Remainers will ensure the score is evened - what happens next is the interesting one0 -
Game over for Patel. Trying to take everyone down with her is hilarious, if totally stupid.
On the continent most papers seem to think they can measure the rest of May's tenure in days & weeks.0 -

Money would be for IDF treating syrian civilians, injured in syria not Israel
She says FO and No 10 knew, as does an Israeli newspaper.... seems incredible she d do something like this off her own bat... now what if she could prove FO and No 10 were lying???? Toast for May and no jam.

Well, she's arrived at no.10 so I don't think she'll be a minister much longer thankfully.0

And in other news, as the rail strike over 'unsafe' trains with driver operated doors screws things up for hundreds of thousands of commuters, RMT boss Mick Lynch is spotted going to work - on a train with driver operated doors.

Seems unbelievable that a Gov minister can swan around the middle east, visiting no go areas, invite Israeli ministers to Parliament and yet no one in Gov knows what she is doing..... right.0 -

We've got driverless trains on the DLR but somehow that's OK."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -

I don't know - if you are prepared to inconvenience thousands of people on the basis that trains with driver operated doors are unsafe but are then seen travelling in one in an apparent state of unworried calm seems to suggest that you don't actually think that they are unsafe after all and that maybe you are merely using the issue to your own personal political ends. If he really felt that they were unsafe he wouldn't travel on them. I think hypocrisy is a fairer term than irony.Faster than a tent.......0 -
