And Konig limited his losses very well. Good to see Betancur right up there.

Ryder finishes in sixth and should be into the top 10 overall. A great ride.

    Konig did OK too.

A good ride from Betancur. 10th on the stage and his form is slowly returning. Has huge class.

    DD.

I think that was Geniez who came in with the Caruso group. Nice.

With that last attack, Landa may well move into 2nd. Before he wasn't.
Cunning Contador, can play divide-and-rule with Astana now.

That was a belter, mainly because it was Contador's mechancal they attacked. They won't do that again in a hurry.

But imagine that with the GC at stake. The top 4 are consistently 4-5 mins ahead of the best of the rest in the big 2 tours. Big structural porblem.

What a wonderful stage that was, cycling at its finest. Got to love the fighter in Contador - that was a huge margin he clawed back on the Mortirolo. From that point onwards he looked a little laboured but then he did not need to press any harder.

There are some beastly stages to come - I just hope he can win one of them as he deserves it. With his climbing performance, Quintana and Froome are going to have a great deal of trouble. His mental strength and racing tactics are just superb as well. What a total heavyweight champion.

Aru could easily have given up but he rode his heart and guts out. I wonder how he is able to recover from that as he was dipping into the red zone there.

    Can't wait for the photos.

Why? I don't understand. Because Aru was the designated leader? Landa has overtaken Aru in GC. Landa is better than Aru.

Absolutely. Shows that a GT with a boring GC can still be a great GT. We've had eventful stages pretty much every days for more than two weeks now.

OK, relatively less exciting all the way until the very end :) . The first week was great, but Contador got this wrapped up before the proper mountains started, didn't he? Even today was only exciting GC-wise for about 15 minutes. Just pointing out that great stages can make a great GT, not only a nailbiting GC until the end.

“Today I really proved that I can be one for the strongest riders on the climbs, and we still have several uphill finishes left,” said Landa. “As a team, we will have to stick together and stay attentive.”

“We saw that Alberto had a problem, and Katusha went full gas, so we worked with them,” Landa said. “On the Mortirolo, Fabio Aru wasn’t feeling good and he told me to go with Contador and Kruijswijk.”

“It was a very hard day, an incredible stage,” Contador said. “Cycling isn’t mathematics. I had a puncture on the descent [before the Mortirolo]; Ivan Basso gave me a wheel, but ahead they were going at full speed, and it was impossible to close the gap immediately. It was hard for me, but I’m very happy with the time gaps now.”

“To Mikel Landa, I can only say: chapeau. These are the stages that people remember,” Contador said.

Well, if as a result of today's effort, Contador has a much harder than expected Giro over the next stages, can he recover in time for the Tour? It may be to the advantage of Froome & Quintana then.

Great stage and great rides from Landa, Contador and Kruijswijk. I think it could have been an even better stage had Landa been able to ride at his own tempo.

You could see how much that chase had taken out of Contador by the end of the stage. Contador is clearly the strongest rider in the Giro but only time will tell how much these hard miles have taken out of him come the second and third week of the Tour.

Gutted to miss the stage today. Contador is a class act though, he's proved yet again how mentally as well as physically strong he is. What a ride.

Landa is his only possible threat, but its difficult to tell whether Contador let him go or genuinely couldn't follow. Certainly Landa doesn't consider himself in contention, judging by how early he celebrated. Either way, he's almost certainly too far back.
