It looks like Ryder is on a mission today. Pushing on at the front of the break. Fingers-crossed he can go all the way.

Here is what's going to happen in case you aren't able to watch. 7-13 riders at the top of Mortirolo, a few catch up on the descent and Betancur wins the sprint.

Good job Hesjedal is giving this break some impetus. They are going to need a much larger gap if they mean business. Niemiec was 6th in GC in 2013 - the man knows how to climb.

Watching Hesjedal race you just feel that he loves riding his bike.

Ah, didnt notice first time around that they do this Aprica climb twice...Hesjedal just went under the finish line.

He has already 45 secs or so on the chasers.

What on earth is Hesjedal doing? He must have forgotten to engage his brain this morning

It is a good question but what if he goes all the way to finish? He will be a bloody legend! It is his style though, to go from a long way out. If anyone can pull it off, he probably can.

He is certainly going for it. Two bad speed wobbles and a foot-out-of-the-pedal corner on that descent from him.

    DD.

As they were just saying on Eurosport, there's no protracted valley sections so that helps a small break (or Hesjedal!) to stay away.

Splits all over the place at the moment.

Contador with only Kreuziger left trying to pull back entire Astana and Katusha teams. Not on the steeps yet though. WHAT A RACE.

50 sec deficit due to attacking Contador after a flat tyre

Contador now has 2 riders helping out

Going to be one hell of an effort up the Mortirolo to catch the Astana express

Ha he's already taken nearly 15s back apparently. Passing people like they're not moving.

Be interesting to see how Astana react.

Not quite as blatant as the 1999 version, but intriguing anyway as to what he'll do – or be able to do – after catching Aru. :D
