BREXIT - Is This Really Still Rumbling On? 😴

The government has invited chefs to put forward vegan alternatives. No idea what they plan do with them - perhaps a government recipe website - but the writing is on the wall for foie gras.0

I’d argue it would be bigger impact to have the Uk lean on the nations which are big producers to rein it in but whatever. Most people who feel strongly about animals don’t eat it anyway0

We could have done that more easily when we were in the EU.0 -
I'd argue there will be little impact in any case.rick_chasey said:I’d argue it would be bigger impact to have the Uk lean on the nations which are big producers to rein it in but whatever. Most people who feel strongly about animals don’t eat it anyway
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
I assume the Protocol would prevent the banning of foie gras in NI.

Easier to just ban it. It's laughable to suggest the UK could have stopped France making it.briantrumpet said:TheBigBean said:

No Government with JRM is going to ban Fois gras.
Bottom trawling certainly sounds like something that needed banning, sounds like the sort of thing that goes on in those private clubs.0 -

We can ban it, but it'll make Llaregub difference, as I expect most UK people are like me and wouldn't dream of buying it. I think the UK did make a difference to animal welfare in the EU - we led on several issues (battery cages, sow stalls, etc) which were later incorporated into EU animal welfare law.
How about something like this? https://ec.europa.eu/food/system/files/2020-11/aw_platform_20201103_pres-09.pdf
Shame we can't have a voice in that, wouldn't you say?0 -
Oh come on. Vegan foie gras? I cannot believe you are taking that seriously.TheBigBean said:The government has invited chefs to put forward vegan alternatives. No idea what they plan do with them - perhaps a government recipe website - but the writing is on the wall for foie gras.

Next they'll ban forced rhubarb.1 -
Presumably it’s princess nutnut influence as I doubt BoJo gives a sh!t - probably orders it himself when he’s not paying the bill-1

Nice combination of speculation and b1tching. Not sure what it adds to the debate though?rick_chasey said:Presumably it’s princess nutnut influence as I doubt BoJo gives a sh!t - probably orders it himself when he’s not paying the bill

The RSPCA was founded in 1824. The UK has a decent history on animal welfare, so these sorts of changes shouldn't be that suprising.0
-
It's production was already banned in the UK and has been a criminal offence since 2006. We import about 200 tonnes a year. Its production is also banned in a number of EU countries. Imports have not been banned yet.TheBigBean said:The RSPCA was founded in 1824. The UK has a decent history on animal welfare, so these sorts of changes shouldn't be that suprising.

If and when we do actually ban imports then we can add fractionally reducing the global market for foie gras to the list.TheBigBean said:

We're obviously not allowed to conjecture what we might have done to its production had we stayed in the EU.0 -

You really love pointlessly having to change clocks.TheBigBean said:Oh, can you add to the list being able to keep summer time, or is that on your bad list as it creates problems in Ireland.

It would be more meaningful if we were to propose imposing our higher animal welfare standards on all meat product imports, like say, Danish pork and bacon, rather than cherry picking an item that is already hardly eaten in the UK.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! I don't think it is the sort of thing that should be regulated by the EU. All over the world, there are loads of quirky timezones designed to keep the locals happy. Therefore, if the UK were to change this I think there should be a discussion on it beyond a few MEPs.kingstongraham said:

As it happens, I'm happy with the status quo. Never go to work/school in the dark. Stays light until 10pm in the summer.0 -
That's just "I don't like the EU' logic.
