I mean, just look at that. Only 150km, with a grippy climax.
The circuit in La Spezia is 17.1 km long and very demanding. After 1.3 km, the riders turn right onto the narrow Corso Cavour. The first part of this road is slightly uphill on cobblestones. With about 14 km to go, the peloton tackles a fast and very tricky chicane. Soon after the Biassa climb start. The first 2 km are very steady with about 5-6 %. The last part however, includes numerous hairpin corners with double digit gradients.

With Gilbert's form from yesterday I hope he gives this one a shot. He went pretty deep yesterday though so hope he has recovered.

TV already on in Italy. Riders are just rolling out of the neutral start.

Ignore the Griepel one. That was me and I looked at the wrong stage profile.

Precisely, I actually sense a breakaway win today but MM will will the bunch kick to keep the jersey.

Group of 4 just merged with group of 25. Peloton dawdling fair way back.

I think folks are under estimating the final climb with their PTPs.
The official Giro profile is off.
    It's 3.4kms at 9% and the top 2kms average 11%.
Not sure that Matthews can make that, if it all kicks off.

Lol. Kreuziger could win the Giro on this stuff. What on earth are Astana and Sky doing.

Big group 3'30 up the road, no idea who's in it but most teams have somebody in it with 116km to go.

EQS at the front of the peloton keeping the pace up. Light crash at back of peloton.

Busy old start. Twitter saying Konig is in the group too, but I'm pretty sure he isn't.

He seemed to manage OK at Amstel Gold. Seems a worthwhile pick on that evidence alone.

Saying that I would be happy to see Pip and the little Irish Prince O'Cunego rip it up.

The big group out front has been whittled down a bit - Konig wasn't in it I don't think, ES said Siutsou but whoever it was has gone now. Main peloton in cruising mode.

If a couple of really strong guys go full gas near the top (people like Gilbert, Chavanel, Paolini, Battaglin) then I think the effort needed to bring them back will be too much for Matthews.

They need to be committed though.

Don't think so, he's in a group with Sioutsov about 2 mins further back with Cataldo stranded in the middle trying to TT up to the front group. Peloton 10:30 to front now.

    This is absolutely thrilling stuff.

Sky are weird and Contador got no clue if he likes this scenario or not.

    All over the place.

Seems like shorter stages are the way forward ;).

Time and time again we see more aggressive racing.
