Interesting to hear Sarah Storey operates both brakes with one lever - Hugh Porter put her riding at the back/off the back down to the added dificulties in handling a bike with one functioning hand. Is he right in that does anyone know? Is that how she always rides in a bunch - does she do much bunch racing because it must make it nigh on impossible to compete except where she is strong enough to ride off from the gun.
There's a rider in my area that competes perfectly well at Regional A level and has made 2nd cat despite only having one arm. He uses the two levers on one side and handles his bike in the bunch as well as anyone. He also holds his own perfectly well in cyclo cross.
she explained the setup and why she was doing it here

I think as ever with Hughs commentary, kind of got the general gist right, but missed the important key detail that explains it a bit more clearly and obviously riding in a large bunch and then trying to hold a drinks bottle or food to refuel, if the bunch suddenly brakes what do you do ?0 -

Well two women's races with mainstream coverage in the UK - La Course and the Ride London event - both dull as ditchwater and while the riders could show a bit more ambition 90% of the reason is the circuit. I understand the reasons why these events are as they are and I'm sure the riders welcome the chance to ride in front of big crowds with presumably half decent prize money but what a shame the parcours is so limiting - at least in the London event is it not possile to find some sort of a hill ?[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

Nearest decent hills would be Denmark Hill (and that's across the river) or up North to Highgate/Hamstead/Ally Pally . Both would make the circuit longer by an order of magnitude. There is constitution hill - but that really is not worth bothering with.
And "dull as ditchwater"? La Course was terrifying with women sliding all over the place - and the finale was brilliant with Anna vd Bregan soloing off for last 3ish km.
Ride London was only just less hectic with another brutal crash on the line at the bell and the amount of attacking and countering in the last 5 or 6 laps trying to forge a gap was great fun; it is a city centre criterium circuit - what more do you expect?0 -

What more do I expect, on those circuits absolutely nothing. I'm not a fan of crits as TV viewing anyway but those circuits are too wide even to produce a good crit, the only technical element was the wet surface which produced lots of crashes, maybe it's just me but I don't watch a race to see people crash.
As I say I understand the reasons why, the desire to show off the city is paramount rather than the desire to produce a good race, I just think it's a shame the best coverage of women's racing on mainstream TV is of what are two of the worst races in terms of providing entertainment, well unless you enjoy watching riders crash.
I wonder what people would make of the men and women swopping over next year, the men do the crit and the women go out into Surrey and over Box Hill ? I'm not suggesting it should happen but it does bring into focus the fact that interest in Cav et al riding laps in central London would be of much less interest except as some glorified post Tour crit.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -

No not good at all. Italians still lack respect for cyclists (I'm there a lot). They pass far too close and take risks. Similar driving mentality in the Savoies and culturally they are very close.BASI Nordic Ski Instructor

yep I agree, most city centre crits can be technical, include reasonable climbs, descents, sprints and the team tactics and breaks can be key.
the RideLondon Grand Prix course, well its just a big oval, virtually pan flat a little gentle rise and slope and there was one slightly tricky corner and that was it really its only because of the location for the finish it gets picked. same with La Course, technically the course route isnt difficult, its much worse obviously in the rain.
but yes a shame two hi profile races, live tv coverage and neither race will live long in the memory0 -

Every time he does something that I remotely agree with (the Peter Sagan letter to UCI/Vuelta Organisers) he follows it up with an act of such mind-numbing stupidity, bigotry, and arrogance that I shudder to think that I was agreeing with him a few days before.0 -

Unfortunately, being a billionaire means he probably doesn't give a sh*t. That's the reality.
If a few women Tweet him back because they are offended, what difference does it make to him? he still goes home to his mansion, his billions and his Pro Cycling team.
(By the way I'm not agreeing with him, I'm just saying - personally i think he's a prat)0 -
I have to ask but where is the leadership in all this. Have we heard anything from the UCI or Brian Cookson about Oleg's behaviour?
Is it acceptable that the Governing Body of this sport does nothing to support The women's side of the sport (which it ALSO governs) from an all out assault from this F*ckwit?
I would also question the behaviour of Velon in this as well. They have stayed absolutely silent on this matter. I can only assume from that that the business group that wants to drag cycling into the modern business age is OK with one of it's members projecting this horrific sexist image.
Way to go Velon!0 -
In other news, me and girlfriend last month came across Eileen Roe in Wiggle-Honda kit scoffing pancakes with a friend in Gouda, NL. Seems a very nice person.0

Molly Van Houweling, 42 year old American, has broken the women's hour record, beating the 2003 record by Leontien van Moorsel by a few hundred meters. It's now 46,274 m. Bit of a surprise that! Can't find much about Van Houweling at all, apart from a 16th place in the Chrono des Nations 2 years ago. She rode it in Mexico at altitude0

Pretty impressive. Be interesting to see one of the top riders give it a go. For some reason I got an email from Brian Cookson inviting me to watch it on the UCI channel. How he got my email I don't know.BASI Nordic Ski Instructor
