Yes indeedy. My first ever Alpine climb, started at 7 in morning whilst very quiet and cool. .Quite fantastic to see Mont Blanc as one climbs to the cafe and lake at the top.

I reckon the climb on other side of valley to the Ski Station is harder, 'Plateau de Saix'. It has never featured in any pro race as it would have to be a stage finish (dead end).

    Top: 1626 m
    Average gradient: 9.2 %

I'm a regular on the Joux Plane, well, every July :D This year, for the first time I went up Plateau des Saix (aka Samoens 1600) and yes, it is very hard! The view from the top is superb.

So this was the best challenge in my area a youth. Very challenging on a 3 gear Raleigh commando!

    Definitely not.

From the hairpins I thought perhaps Rosedale, but I've never been there so that is most likely total bullocks.

It is indeed Rosedale Chimney Bank. No Bullocks whatsoever.

And thats just the top section! The bit just after the second hairpin is the worst. Lovely view from the top though!

I'd rather go up that one than down it.

Looks like that but wrong country. Look carefully at the other photo (sorry edited the wrong one out) and there is a big clue !

Got it (or at least if that's the name for the forest road that turns off from the Bedoin route?) as you probably noticed the clue is the little tower thing at the top just visible through the trees.

The road from Le Bourg D'Oisans to Villard Notre Dame - I think it's just before the 'big' tunnel

That's right. Cracking climb (bit hairy on the way back down though)

I did this in the wet once - rocks falling onto the road, it was very scary....

If you carry on when the road stops, it is possible to negotiate the track to Villard Reymond on a road bike as long as you are steady. Worth it for the views the the Alp.

So is it possible/ advisable to do this on a road bike as a circular route, coming back to Bourg via the Col d'Ornon road? I have heard different people give different opinions....

I think it depends on the state of the road - when I was there we were told that it was very crumbly.

Yes it is possible to do a circular, we did in July this year (for information I was on an R3 with RS81 wheels and 23mm GP 4000's). My advice would be:
    1. Do it from the Le Bourg side as there is a climb and you're better off going up it.
    2. Make sure it hasn't rained for a few days
    3. Take your time and don't expect to set any blistering Strava segments
    4. Keep away from the edge as it could collapse - it is quite a wide track though.

Do it - the views are great ;)

  • Yes i did it as a loop and returning via the lower half of the col d'Ornon back to Bourg d'Oisans. The middle section along the top ridge facing the valley is basically like a logger's road – untarmaced but rideable with occasional puddles. It's in the shade a lot so is likely to be damp unless there hasn't been rain for a while.

They do a very good omlette for lunch at the cafe in the little village at the top of the initial climb from Bourg.

That's the military road on the way past Comptom Bay and into Freshwater. A smashing training route that I do often (albeit from the other way)

Two clues: the TdF is almost certain to go up it in 2015, and here's the top:
