Would just eating 250gs of peas and a glass of water have the same affect?

When I am in weight loss mode, I do the 2:5 diet, rather than the 5:2...

Weekends are harder to control what I eat, but mon-fri at work, in the office, my first eating of the day is lunch, ideally after 1pm and less than 500 cals (low cal soup and 3-4 slices of plain brown bread or pasta/salad). Then a normal meal in the evening (whatever the missus has cooked). If I have done enough additional exercise (go to gym in evening or longer bike ride) and earned it then I get a bowl of reduced sugar alpen in the evening. Other than that, I will drink 6-10 cups of tea with semi-skim milk no sugar during the day.

My commute to work is only about 5 miles, so I do that without breakfast in the morning and dont eat afterwards either.

Only deviation might be if I am doing an extended ride home of 20+ miles in the evening, I would likely have a cereal bar or similar an hour or so before leaving work.

I went down from nearly 18st to 13st that way and never had any problems with lack of energy. The weight loss was easy apart from the last 1/2 st.

My problem is when I get down to target weight and can relax the regime a little - I cant find a balance to 'maintain' that I can live with - as soon as I let myself have a little bit extra, I cant resist taking it too far. I think me and food are a bit like an alcoholic with booze, except I obviously cant avoid it entirely like they can!
  • As pointed out already a few times now... I am really not interested in any 6:1 5:2 2:5 or whatever combination of eating-non eating diet you try to flog... I'm just not.... narrow minded? Possibly, but I am not.

    Anyway... day 3: - 700 g

Yeah, sorry - my post wasnt aimed at you but we have gone a bit off topic and into just comparing different diets in general, which was what I was contributing to. I didnt intend recommending this was right for you!

I eat it in the canteen, and dont work in an office but that is beside the point.
I try not to eat bread, and cant be bothered to make sandwiches anyway.
A box of 24 shredded wheat from aldi is £1.77, say i have 4 a day (breakfast and lunch) that is less than 30p a day. Combine that with 2 pieces of fruit, i eat at work for less than a quid a day. Milk is free btw!

It also lets me keep a pretty good idea of calorie intake - which is the whole point of this thread is it not?
My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...

Much to my dislike, this morning I tipped 75 Kg on the scale... I'd like to go back to 70-72 where I belong.

Here is my plan (based on the Sky guy suggestions as seen on TV)

    1) Morning porridge and coffee (sugar) ca. 350 cal
    2) Ride to work ca. 50 min at good pace
    3) Second porridge, small ca. 150 cal
    4) Lunch: jacked potato with beans, ca. 500 cal
    5) Ride home ca. 50 min at good pace
    6) Dinner: typically salmon (200 g), brown rice (100 g dry) and lentils 80 g dry, bit of olive oil, maybe a few veg. (non starchy)... ca. 1200 cal

Total: ca. 2,200 cal which should be just less of what I need, so I should slowly lose weight... thoughts?

Apart from your dinner there isn't much nutritional value in the rest of your meals. You could add berries and some seeds to your porridge, and some green salad to your jacket potato.

What you could do is not bother with the first bowl of porridge and have a bigger bowl after you ride into work - supplemented with a banana and other fruit.

You might be looking to shed weight but also think about helping your body recover from your fast paced rides
  • I've started slinging chia seeds into my porridge with banana. I was recommended to try them by someone as a great source of omega-3. They taste of nothing and the only watch out is that they absorb quite a bit of fluid so you need to add water/milk to the quantity you'd normally use.

Good to see you are loosing weight slowly! -just remember as you are loosing weight to maintain the weight loss you need to adjust you calorie intake. I find this simulator useful as you can keep entering your new weigh weekly and get you new calorie target:

Back when I was smoking and had a lot less energy, whenever I ate a couple of greasy pasties, they literally knocked me out where I was yawning over and over again after eating them. I am certain some foods are so bad they take away more than they provide. If I have a drink of blended veg (or just peas) it wakes me up.

I remember at my mates, he made this drink, god knows what was in it, was a kinda purple grey cement looking sludge... but I got on my bike when I came out of his house and instantly could go faster! He threw just about everything in. I can't stand bananas though... I don't belong on a cycling forum I know. bananas ruin smoothies for me. You might as well add a potato.
  • I'm losing weight so my trousers are loose

If I lose my temper, I feel like loosing off a few shots

    Just saying...

Its why over eating can be just as bad for a ride. The body basically wants to sleep it off after. Its actually busy trying to digest it all.

The magic shake probably digested more easily or simply had less kcal in. Would be hard to have more. (pasty is about 800kcal)

    Narrow minded ?.......

    Definitely.

You started the thread by saying you wanted to lose weight.
You proposed your plan to do so and asked for thoughts on the plan.
What works for one person deos not necessarily work for someone else, but several respondents have quoted success with the 5:2 or whatever. It is no more a "non-eating" diet than the one you propose. Over a week, a 5:2 dieter will probably eat more than you do on your plan.

    Whatever, it doesn't matter.
    Do you own thing.
700g in three days is irrelevant. Thats not even a good bowel movement. :D
Many people can lose several kg a week initially.
What matters is can you keep it off.

Call back in a year and tell us if your plan worked.
  • I'm not sure that's a narrow-minded approach. Plenty, like me, have tried the 5:2 and not got on with it. I feel totally crap on the fasting days - cold and irritable. I have, however, lost a kilo a week week after week just by eating smaller portions - an approach which is totally sustainable for me. We're all different and it's foolish to think what works for you will work for someone else.

In other news, I went out for a run

The way it worked with me, I realized I need to be on 1400-1600 calories a day to lose weight and if I eat that amount, I am grumpy and hungry eating my usual stuff.

So I went all out and started having those peas drinks (250g peas makes about a pint of pea soup) then later on (6 hours later, some days 8 hours later) I had a normal meal, but it was always either broccoli and salmon or green beans and salmon! I ate the same thing every day and did this for about 2 or 3 months. I was losing 8-12lb a month doing that, but then I was on 1400 cals a day pretty much every day and never grumpy or getting light headed... why? Those pea drinks. I was running on the spot until then never losing even 1lb. Who knows if its bad for you or if you should eat that way, but I got real sick of not being able to lose fat and just thought if I have the most nutritious veg and meat and don't deviate from it, something must give.

Now if anything I am too skinny again. I am becoming a "miser" or whatever they are, a meanie.
  • Oh and Ugo - one bit of advice I don't strictly stick to as I like crap food too much but for optimum health is;

"If it has more than 5 ingredients in it then don't bother eating it"

It's virtually impossible to be overweight following this method as it cuts out completely the sorts of food which it's easy to overeat. It's essentially just sticking to natural stuff which when eaten at a slow pace is far more satiating. For instance I could put away 10 doughnuts at 2000 calories in less than an hour, but I'd have a hernia before I consumed 2000 calories worth of fruit, veg, lean meats etc in one go.

Also try adding a bit of strength work in the gym, also I find CLA works well for me if you don't mind supplements.

But it's basically balanced diet, 5-6 meals a day, same time everyday so your body gets in a routine.

Oh, that's what we need... a food snob! An adorer of the Holy Protein and a Starch denier...

Anyway, with my not-worth to eat food we are down to minus 1.3 Kg in 4 days... bit quicker than anticipated, but I'll take it... 8)
