Yh thanks. I think I'll give it a go. I'm going riding for 30 mins on Tuesday, then Thursday then Saturday this week but will try to do mornings as opposed to nights, don't like nights, it's depressing and it's dark. I'm keen on attempting the canal ride as I've done it before only last time I had some support from some good hearted cyclists who helped me along the way by guiding me to Leeds but then after the 1st time I attempted it myself then went regular for the next 6 weeks. Occasionally I would stop and eat half way then ride there, come home after 4 hours then eat again in the evening. I don't believe eating and eating helps to lose weight or maintain consciousness, however I feel that healthy and nutritional eating maintains a good strong mind and low weight and to an extent high intensity riding. That's just my beliefs, not always right and doesn't work for most but does for some depending on how an individuals body functions. My brother says everyones body is the same but it's all down to how we look after it and treat it. I'm eating sensibly now and drinking lots of water everyday.

I managed to drink 75cl of water in 2 hours today and for past 3 weeks. I will also be joining gym soon so on days I don't go cycling I will do it indoors on a cycling machine combined with some running and light weights. However I'll see how it goes on 2 moderately sized meals a day, I did say before that if I increase my riding and the number of days I workout I will increase my eating, slightly but will make it a light 3rd meal like a cereal. I've tried eating just 3 meals a day but can't do it, so will have to downsize.

Might change my annual week holiday date to the 3rd week instead of 2nd week.

Nothing brings out a smile, like eating sensibly :)

You needed guiding on a canal towpath? How the f**k could you have possibly gone wrong?
Do you regularly sniff glue and drink lead based paint? If not then for f**ks sake please start.

Very nice, any chance of getting something slightly bigger, maybe a 25-30 litre instead of a 20? Just that if I ever go shopping for shirts and jeans and stuff instead of carrying bags around I can put it straight in to a rucksack. Price is good though. Or do you think it will be enough to put the following items in it, lunch box, 2 bottles of water, a rainjacket, shell only and maybe a shirt and a pair of jeans. ??

I wonder what could be used to find that out?

  • Could you maybe fit a basket to your bike? Or pull one of these http://ebay.eu/1zMOqsa filled with food/drink/new trousers?

Edit: You can also buy modern water bottles which can be refilled. They even fit in those cage thingies on your bike.

Thanks neilus, I've ordered the backpack, in black, 20 litre. Cost £13.98. I found a 30 litre one for £20 but it was only 3cm's bigger.

Cooldad, have you ridden this week?

I'm stuffed, had 5 slices of veg pizza.

please think about your reasoning as to why you didn't buy a bag that held 10l more than the one you did buy......

I saw someone riding one of those in the Summer.
The fact that he was transporting 3 children in the front was impressive.
That he was going uphill at a reasonable pace was even more impressive.
That I spotted the electric motor as I passed him was less impressive.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Well for a start, it was £10 more. Yet I was willing to buy the military one for £67, this one here >> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Karrimor-Sf-P ... 4adb43ed77

However I thought, because I don't have enough money in the bank, I decided to go for the cheaper option as I'm always buying things which cost me through the roof sometimes. It was a nice little rucksack after having read the reviews and only cost £10. I regret selling my Karrimor SF Predator 45 military rucksack 2 months ago. I used that bag on trips around the world and I might buy another infact. I feel really sad, well mostly regret. The reason why I bought a military civilian rucksack was because it was made from a very tough, robust but durable waterproof fabric. And it looked the business aswell as I had a Olive Green one.

    This one here, Karrimor Predator SF 45 >> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Karrimor-Sf-P ... 486862fcc4

I used it for cycling trips on the canal a few years ago and when I went shopping in Leeds and Tescos/Morrisons etc, It always proved useful. I could fit loads in there. Will consider buying another soon in Christmas, not gonna tell my parents though, they thought I paid too much for it.

It's been 5 days now and I haven't ridden, weather was very cold this morning, almost icy infact.

I don't have it often, once every 2 months or something. I really am gonna start my diet from next week, not to say that I can't start now but, last 12 months I've cut out diluted drinks, crisps, chocolates and sweets, not that I eat sweets or chocolates I just don't like them. Every now and then I get a craving for fast food and junk food and the kind of food I eat appeals for a variety of reasons. But it shouldn't be every now and then should it or somethings wrong?

Reducing the intake of junk food, It's killing of the internal carnal desires which takes time, controlling food desires etc I have gone from having a junk mind to a somewhat sound mind lol but could improve a lot. It's particularly hazardous to our well-rounded development as we grow up.

However, I know that regularly eating junk food does not provide the necessary nutrients us adults need for sufficient energy to engage in physical activity, like cycling. And I've read somewhere or have been told that a lack of physical activity is harmful to physical and mental well being and may also exclude someone from critical social development, especially if you're a teen growing up.

I like to buy Granary or brown tea cakes from the bakery and make my own salad sandwiches with cheese and take them to work. Been doing this for 6 months now, it's better than eating junk food I think then again, it's got a certain amount of Cathedrals cheese inside it with tons and tons of salad and onions and peppers.

You've been around the world yet you're getting your knickers in a right old twist about a simple canal ride that you've done a dozen times...???
Karrimor once made top notch stuff for serious alpinists but have recently gone cheap and cheerful. Sufficient for occasional use, nothing more. Certainly wouldn't spend that money on a karrimor rucksack, much better stuff out there, cheaper too.

As training for your canal ride how about a canal swin? Maybe with very heavy shoes.

If nothing else, Cody should be commended for his ability to resist rising to any of the flack and abuse he's been given. I guess I'll just go ahead, and do it. Can't be that difficult, just that it's been a few years since I've been and one day whilst riding on that canal, I slowed down and stopped because it was raining and I leaned over to the left of the canal, and fell over and off my bike on to a muddy side path which was covered by thorny bushes, which was infact the edge of the canal which lead to a fast flowing river just under neath it which was about a 20 foot drop, I managed to stay still to avoid further fall in to the river and just slowly edged back on to the path. Was a close one, phew!

I'm gonna give it some thought this month if I want to buy the same rucksack again. I sold mine for £75, but paid £80 for it 3 year ago. They're now a little more expensive. They are made very well infact.

I've only been to Pakistan 4 times and Saudi once and the bag really came in handy then. But I do plan on going other places too next year.

Other than that I don't know what else to buy for around the same price, what would you suggest?

If you are serious about rucksacks, look at the Osprey range.

I have owned Ospreys for years and use them in the Scottish mountains during winter/summer.

So I'm sure they'll stand up to your towpath shenanigans.

Very nice rucksacks I had a look last night and today. Evans are selling the Osprey Escapist 30 Litre for £58. Looks like a nice travel/cycling rucksack. Thanks for the link,I will be giving it some serious thought over the next month.

    Much appreciated.

    Neilus

In 2001, went for 3 months when I was 10, then in 2002 when I was 11, I stayed there for 9 months because I was a naughty boy in school and dad sent me to Pakistan, worked in the fields doing manual labour, went to school, travelled all over and ate from nice restaurants etc I had 10 rupees to spend a day, which was 5pence in english currency. That would buy me a packet of crisps and a bottle of coke.

Then went again in 2007, on uncles wedding, we built a 5 large bedroom house there which took a year to build. The building started in 2002.

And finally in 2012 in October went again during the winter. for one month only.

I went to Sher Shah Suri Fortress which was a castle and large grounds which was 20 mile long all way round in Jhelum which belonged to the Muslim king of Asia at that time around 500 years ago. Went to Islamabad the capital to visit Shah Faisal Mosque and to Lake View Park and to the mountainous region of Murree.

When I was little we use to see the river banks in our village after it rained heavy, all the water from the mountain would come rushing down through the village flooding the fields and walkpaths and rivers. I use to have cold showers and showers in the rain when it rained! I've got pictures of me next to a kush, but there was no bud on the kush, just the leaf. The pakistani kush is available in the North, no where near the citys.

I've been to Mirpur and Mangla Damn, sat in little 3 wheeler Chinchi's and rode around the busy streets which always smell of food and fresh cooked currys and bakery products free from commercial ingredients.

I've been to Kharri Sharif, where all the tombs of saints are buried and whose bodies are preserved from decay, through the will of god of course, I actually saw the body of a saint who is 300 years old and his body was intact just as it had been laid the day it was buried 300 years before, couldn't see a single inch of rot on his face or body, this strengthened my belief in god I tell you, not even science could explain such a thing. Every month we would travel to diferrent villages in remote areas where very very pious saints lived and were buried and we do special prayers, prepare a full size lamb and eat it with the poor people or with family. Also every month in our village we hold a food gathering called a Yarmee, where we make hundreds and hundreds of chapattis and serve Lamb curry to all the village's inhabitants for a full day.

In Pakistan where we live in the beautiful countryside, the community cohesion is at it's best compared to citys where greed just takes over and people want to be richer than the next man and compete for wealth and riches etc I live in the best part, in Azad Kashmir, an hour away from the Kashmir border and 4 hours away from the nearest hospital in Islamabad ..

But now Pakistan is plagued with terrorism, it ain't safe, the taliban are prowling the mountain areas and it's really dangerous.

By the way my rucksack arrived today, the £10 one you suggested, it's nice and small lol
