Billy Bragg was on some programme with Kevin Bridges last night and was making an argument that an independent Scotland would bring England and Scotland closer together. Mutual respect and all that. Some of his musings did seem to make some sense. Better than the Scottish 16 year-olds who had the vote but didn't really know what to do with. Oh and of course Billy Bragg hasn't got a vote...
  • Hey! Since when is UK Manufacturing really that bad? I hate to tell you there is still UK Manufacturing going on. Yes, we are no Germany but we are still doing ok. I've worked for a few manufacturing companies and deal with a lot more now and we all seem to be investing and growing. Mind you I am in automotive so perhaps that is one of the exceptions. Vtech will know more. Of course you'll argue foreign owned, blahblahblah, but they are contributing to UK economy all the same. Midlands is still working it seems.
  • Billy Bragg make sense? Oh I missed that. Still it had to happen one day. Isn't he the red wedge singer songwriter who seems to be all union is great, working man is great and down with Thatcher, conservatives, etc.???

Yes that is he. Red wedge I'm not sure is that like urban Green Belt?
Woman on Newsnight who was Scot's but can't recall name some business woman who was a strong 'No' initially said yes to Independence when asked ... she was very confused.

I think I got that red wedge reference right. It was a collective of leftist types from the artistic community and especially music that linked in with politics and leftist politicians such as Ken Livingstone I think to promote socialism but especially defeat Thatcher's conservative government in the '87 election. Was supported by Kinnock, Robin Cook (former home or foreign secretary under Blair IIRC) and probably Ken Livingstone/Jack Straw/etc. I was young in the 80s so I was aware of politics back then but not to the level I took it all in.

A country that raises £53 Bn (Including oil revenue) and gets to spend £65 Bn is shouting that it is being treated unfairly.
Jeez! I thought Scousers were adept at portraying their victim status but they are amateurs in comparison.

A predictable ill informed Daily Mail classic. Take the time to actually do some research and you'll find that that's a myth:

A Country running at a deficit?
    Hmmm.
I think that I have heard of something similar closer to home.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

IIRC the expenditure plans for iScotland assumed a $110 per barrel price for oil. (Sorry, can't find the link.)
Today Brent Crude is $97.70 and falling.
Quite a volatile market to account for 15% of your revenue would you say?

Including Oil revenues, Scottish fiscal balance deficit was lower as a proportion of GDP than UK deficit - 7.3% vs 5.9%. What was your point?

It is clear that Scotland can afford to be an independent country and is not going to suddenly become a Third World country overnight. Whether it should is for the people of Scotland to decide, though being divorced from little Englander types isn't the greatest loss.

Edinburgh and Glasgow are finer cities than most of what passes for civilization in England.

Not in the least insinuating Scotland will become a third world country, just pointing out that your Great Leader's figures don't bear scrutiny.
From Day 1 you will be running a deficit with no LOLR and will have to borrow at higher rates than the UK does presently because you will be deemed a greater risk.

Stop it Bally, you're confusing me, this is not meant to be the serious thread :? This is the light hearted, jokey, p*ss taking one :P

Now reply to Mr Com's comment about Edinburgh and Glasgow being finer cities than most of England with the contempt it deserves

No, it is simply a statement of fact.

Would be really interesting to know when the last time most of you were ever in Scotland to be such experts. I suspect the Daily Mail is the main source of 'knowledge' here.
  • Will I need a passport after Friday to get my deep fried mars bar and pizza fix?? It's the small things you'll miss the most when they leave the union.
  • I resent that comment. Never read the Daily Wail. In fact I have read the Scotsman and The Daily record more times than the Daily Wail. Just because I am English doesn't mean I have no standards! If you must push me I'm a Guardian or an Independent reader. If I am bored I also read a few FT articles but I don't like pink paper so I have to be bored. Seriously though, if you want the Daily Wail level of paranoia over Independence but won't lower yourself I can heartily recommend The Daily Telegraph. It is seriously fighting it out in the gutter with the Daily Wail!! It is comparable to that Leftist Scots paper (I forget which one now but the one that is so blatantly pro Yes it is at the opposite end of the spectrum to the Mail and the Torygraph. those 3 papers are the most biased and ignorant papers I've read in years. (Oh dear! Have I actually admitted reading the Mail after the opening comment??)

There must be a source for this fact other than your own bigoted beliefs :P

As for when I've been to Scotland, plenty of times to be fair, you've got a fairly decent downhill course going on at Fort Bill.....maybe when you get your independence we could have it shifted down south please 8)

Now dont be passing of a personal preference as fact. Now I like Edinburgh, Glasgow is OK, neither has a patch on the greatest city in the British Isles.

That's probably why we haven't seen him for a few weeks, he predicted the imminent hike in the price of oats so he's getting a job lot in before Thursday

Of course it's true that's why houses in the outskirts of Glasgow and Edinburgh are so expensive whilst you can't give them away near London. It's because everyone in the South East is desperate to move to the frozen wastelands of the north.
