Like the sound of this time trial.

Starting out in Real Monasterio de Santa María de Veruela, the riders head south. According to the profile, the ascent towards the top of Alto del Moncayo starts after 9 km. However, in reality, the road starts to kick up after just 2 km on the bike. The following 6 km have an average gradient of around 4 %. Due to a couple of short descents, the actual uphill gradients are higher. This first part of the stage is much harder than the profile lets you to believe. After another descent, the riders officially start on Alto del Moncayo. These 2.2 km have an average gradient of 7 %. It evens out for a short while near the top, before it kicks up again with nearly 15 % over the top.

Will be interesting to see what bikes get used. Is this likely bike change territory ?

Edit: How technical is the descent ? It doesn't look too bad on the map but then I wasn't drilling down to a really granular level

INRNG suggests that they'll stay on TT bikes...
It has its hard moments particularly towards the top where it’s steep and exposed – passing through terrain suitable to film a western – but remains a place where riders will climb in an aero tuck on their time trial bikes for a lot of the time.
  • If he doesn't fall off, which is very likely, I'd say Froome has this in the bag. I can't see Quintana keeping the jersey and if he does, I'll get very suspicious...

Should be OK in an ITT, no one else around him. He's certainly finding out the negatives of staring at his stem instead of the road of late.

Tony Martin ahead of Froome for the stage (its hilly start but a lot of downhill for him to gain what he'll lose on the up), Froome for the red jersey at end of day but not by enough to hold off Quintana and Valverde in the mountains to come.

Has it been resurfaced since Google were there or does the Alto del Moncayo climbe still looklike this?

  • Be interesting to see how (un)comfortable Contador looks in his TT position.

I'm calling him to lose time against the other contenders today.

I would assume he'll shuffle around in his saddle like a dog with worms as usual.

Has to be big Tony for the win.

Other than that, I'm not sure the time gaps will be big enough between the top guys to make a massive difference to the overall race. Froome to come out on top, which will make the rest of the Vuelta even more interesting.

I await to be utterly wrong, however, as he'll probably stack it. Again.

  • Excellent OP.

    Ty sir.
    Contador is an unknown.
Quintana is bullish. He can TT like a demon as he has shown numerous times.

  • Der Panzerwagon to have a 56T for me, any more and he may require an inner ring to get up the steep bit at the start. Not sure even his pistons could turn 58-25 up 7-8% efficiently?
Think Froome takes this narrowly from him but touch and go. Anyone have an idea on wind direction?

When I looked the other day, all the bookies make TM a very clear favourite (2/3) with Froom 5/2 and Spartacus 8

I'd have an each way bet on Malori if I was into that sort of thing

I think Martin will want this stage, Froome as well but he could come in 100th as long as the other 4 main contenders finish behind him. Kind of a race within a race.

Martin to go 58 and climb inside ring (44 or something?) and uptowards the 11?

In the stage I mention above he had two plus some crazy rear derailleur to enable him to cope with the extreme gear range.

  • 25km descent pretty much, god only knows what speed he will top out at. Extreme tuck with his head further forward than the front wheel again possibly! Looks terrifying every time I see that shot. Any slight ripple in the road and I would be picking my teeth out of the tarmac

Tony Martin covered the 18.8km between the 1st and 2nd time checks in 16 min 19 sec. By my reckoning that is an average speed of just under 43 mph! Not that high for a downhill but that's still some going for a long-ish stretch described by the website linked to in the OP as 'There is a steep and tricky downhill part as the riders reach Talamantes, about 1.5 km after the top of Alto del Moncayo. The road twists and bends. Despite an easy looking profile, there may not be more than 10 km where the time trial specialists will be able to open up their big engines. '.

    Good showing from Cancellara.

Yes, obviously had a strong finish; good to see with the worlds round the corner. He's looked a bit out of sorts tbh but the commentators have been putting that down to the heat in the first week
  • Coppel 10 seconds faster than Martin at the top of the climb.
